I think the funny thing about Winnetouch isn’t that he’s gay, but that he has a Bavarian accent with the stereotypical “gay voice”. And that he seems to have no sense of self preservation or danger (like when he asks the villains to sing a jingle from an ad as his “any last wishes before we k!ll you?” and the villains actually doing it)

My (American) husband loves this film.
You forgot to mention that the chief of the tribe they’re in conflict with is an actor with Indian (from India) heritage to poke fun at Columbus who thought he was in India.
The two indigenous guys with him are actually First Nations Canadians.

Winnetouch living his best life on his "Pink Powder Beauty Ranch" and making friends and finding love with one of the bandits, who was sent after him by the main bad guy is actually peak representation.
Also, while he's a giant stereotype, he's totally skilled and capable of defending himself and his friends. His methods might be unusual, but the work for him.

I don't think you can even start to explain German (and Czech, Slovak, Polish and Eastern European) fascination with native Americans without explaining who Karl May was. Czech scouting and tramping are shaped by his idealised version of the Wild West to this very day, to an extent many would find rightfully reductive and naïve, but coming from a place of deep admiration.
