It is IKEA's Gerton worktop (they were inexpensive and solid, but are now, unfortunately, discontinued); these metal rails underneath are for securing trestles/legs.

The metal holds it flat and adds strength whilst allowing the wood to expand and contract. The screws either side of the middle fixing will be in slotted holes.

Joy for ever. I knew about hinged benches in the '90s - these old Polish DIY papers/books often gave you an idea how to make a workshop in a teeny tiny flat or basement.

Attach a couple of hinged 2x4's near the front and you have a fold-away table. Beauty!

Nice! I actually built a similar hinged bench to conserve space in a previous apartment! (Ended up staying down like 90% of time anyway, though. Haha.)
