In this video I talk about a great book for beginners who are learning abstract algebra. This one says Examination Copy on the cover which is really cool. This book has been reprinted by Dover so it's very affordable and widely available. The book is titled A Book of Abstract Algebra and it was written by Charles C. Pinter.

These Brazilians mentioned by Charles C. Pinter. (Newton da Costa, Ayda Ignez Arruda and Elias H. Alves) are all logicians and mathematicians who developed Paraconsistent Logic.

We used this book when I took my first abstract algebra class. It's my favorite math book so far. It has a ton of exercises, both theoretical and applications. If you get a chance, read the first paragraph of chapter 27. Very dramatic! Thanks for showing it.

I've recently gotten myself a copy of that from a small bookstore I decided to randomly walk into one day, after having read the 2 first chapters from a PDF; interestingly, my copy (McGraw-Hill's "International Edition 1990", paperback) doesn't have the dedication to his Brazillian colleagues, rather being dedicated "To my wife, Donna, and my sons, Nicholas, Marco, Andrés, and Adrian". I'm not that used to reading math books, coming from a hobbyist computer science background, but I absolutely love the author's way of explaining and contextualizing the concepts exposed; I'm glad to see a review of it!

I paused the video at 7:02. This looks really interesting now that I am picking pace in the How To Prove It book by Velleman; currently finishing Chapter 5 Functions. I happen to have the dover version of this book on my Bookshelf (never been opened). I want to read this now! Thanks for this book review.

Great vid! I bought the Dover, soft cover version of this book snd find it to be such a refreshing view of the subject. Its lovely how Pinter jumps directly into binary operations and Groups right away. Instead he leaves Set theory, Integer properties and induction in the appendix for review.

Thank you very much! Looks like an amazing book... I would love to check it out.
I love the dedication at the beginning of the book. I always get annoyed when I see maths authors (and others) dedicating their books to their wives and children who have probably never contributed to the book. I feel delighted to know that there existed a man who valued his friends/colleagues and gave acknowledgement where it is truly due.
I think the man was amazing and the book is amazing, too! I'll definitely give it a read!

My favourite math book, it is what got me into higher math (together with Socratica's awesome group theory videos).
This book is soo well done, such an unassuming masterpiece (also great title). Absolute highest recommendations for beginning higher math self-study and a masterclass in non-fiction writing to boot

A good book for abstract algebra published by Dover. I used it for self study. it is easy to read and has lot of examples. The exercises after each chapter are very helpful. Pinter also authored a book in set theory published by Dover called A Book of Set Theory.

Hey Math Sorcerer, there is a real analysis book that you might be interested in checking out on.
The book is called "Real Analysis with Proof Strategies" by Daniel W Cunningham.
I am still currently reading this book, but so far I find this book the easiest to read and helpful to better prepare myself for a real analysis class.
I find the exercises surprisingly fun (at least for beginners). The only downside is that I was told that this book won't fully help for a rigorous real analysis class.
But the book is super easy to follow along and it's very understandable, so I think it's a good self-study book or a guidance for a real analysis class.
I highly recommend this book for a beginner who's not too comfortable with advanced proofs or doing freestyle proofs with definitions and theorems.
Literally, a high school student might be able to self-study with this book, because it's that simple to read. I think this book may be easier than Jay Cumming's real analysis book.
You should definitely look up into it, I'd like to hear your review on it! =D

I´m a brazilian student of engineering, and I agree with you, but I think you would like to study with this book in one afternoon in my country. You'd be overwhelmed by the beauty, and probably distracted by the numbers :). Thanks for the amazing content. Also my name is João, or John, if you like it :). Hugs from Brazil!

Charles Pinter probably met the mentioned "brazilian friends" at IMPA (Brazilian Institute of pure and aplied mathematics). IMPA is the biggest institute of research in mathematics in south america. It is home of several world class researchers, including Fields Medal winner Artur Avila. It's located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
