John Mearsheimer has openly stated many times that "the U.S. does not tolerate peer-competitors". The U.S. effectively stopped Japanese economic growth with the Plaza Accord in 1985. It's not a coincidence that China's troubles with the U.S. started occurring in a major way around 2012, the year after the Chinese economy overtook Japan's economy to become the second-largest in the world. The key indicator seems to be that, once an economy becomes roughly 1/3rd of the U.S. economy, the U.S. government will then view it as a potential threat and seek to repress it.

Professor Mearsheimer is so honest. If the PRC goes the way of the USSR and becomes much weaker then the USA, then the USA does not need a strong prosperous India. Things can change quickly in this day and age.
