Marguerite Henry wrote BRIGHTY OF THE GRAND CANYON to save the Grand Canyon wild burros from being slaughtered, and she succeeded.  Sadly, this did not save Brighty from his fate.  Her stories about the wild ponies on the islands off Virginia may have saved them, as well. If you know of a kid who loves horse stories, I highly recommend her books.

You failed to mention what happened to the rest of the family. I read in the papers a similar story of a family going for a trek during the winter a few years. ago and having their car stuck in the snow, mom, dad and young son. They were all rescued after their days of ordeal lost in the wilderness. I'm sure the parents learned a lesson about traveling to desolate places in the dead of winter.

very interesting as usual. i have been to visit the grand canyon, i stood on the rim and there was snow. i never thought it would be that cold. poor brighty... :( . the cleveland armory rescue of 580 abandoned burros in the canyon (by airlift) is something i have heard of and is a worthy story in any grand canyon story collection. i do miss your original intro. this one is too short and it lacks the drama the longer version had.

It was stupid to go on vacation amid heavy snow conditions, especially in a place such a the grand Canyon. They're lucky they didn't perish.
