Sanctions against Putin: Could they cripple the global economy? | To the point

Putin‘s war in Ukraine is having a devastating economic impact. Countries across Europe face spiralling prices and shrinking markets.

United as rarely before, the West has fired off one salvo of economic sanctions after another in response to Vladimir Putin’s attack on Ukraine, sending the ruble plummeting and citizens rushing to withdraw their savings from banks. So far that’s prompted no let-up in the fighting. Now the US is upping the pressure, banning oil imports from Russia. Calls for Europe to follow suit grow louder, but countries like Germany fear that would harm citizens and industry. Yet that pain could pale compared to the looming food crisis caused by the shortage of wheat from Ukraine.

Our guests: Katja Gloger (Russia expert), Vendeline von Wedekind (The Economist), Vladimir Esipov (DW).

I'll gladly pay more for my gas if it means teaching that spoiled old man a lesson

Gas prices went up $.50 overnight, and definitely going up. So what. We drive too much here. Carpooling, mass transportation, multi-tasking, electric cars, etc. are not popular here. Maybe they will be.

Let's hope that European countries use the time until next winter to financially support households with implementation of alternative energy sources, like solar etc.

Poor people will pay for it-as usual. Banks and corporation's in for record earnings in 2022( as it was in 2021).

nothing worth doing comes without a cost, the "greatest generation: suffered things we cannot comprehend to give us the life we have I do not think its too much to ask that we step up and try to in a small way pick up that torch. Russia could end up controlling the oil AND the bread basket of Europe Kissinger has a very famous quote about that

Honestly, when they announced that they are opening humanitarian corridors to Russia and Belarus I cynically thought that all 40 Million people from Ukraine should go there. Russia invaded their country, time to make them feel how that feels.

When you’re not thirsty for justice it’s because you’re full of privilege.

Yes some things can go wrong but this is not more important than war. It is not more important than the life of the poor people in Ukraine.

I'm so happy that irrespective of the economy crisis and financial conditions I am still able to earn $19, 500 returns from my initial $6, 500 every 10 days. Crypto Investment is the future!!!

Good lecture from Vladimir, European leaders could care less, all the human rights and bs, but when hardships and sacrifices come, they stay in their bubbles.

Surely as sanctions on Russia are having such an effect on other NATO countries, it must be in the stronger economies best interest to help these struggling economies! I wonder if a mass move by consumers to decrease wheat consumption in countries like Australia (who have shown before they can act in unison with the mass boycott of milk over a pricing issue years ago), New Zealand, America (not likely), The UK, would it be possible to free up more supplies for export?

We'll organize our lives and they will be a bit harder for a while and maybe we'll learn to achieve energetic independence out of this as a plus.

It's nothing compared to what the Ukrainians are suffering, and it is nothing compared to what the Russian people will suffer until they decide to re-enact July 17, 1918.

Punishing the innocent Russians to get to Putin. Sounds like justice.
