Ep.15: How to Sing-Breathing with Your Diaphragm

When you sing do you run out of air when you breath? Does it feel like your high notes don’t have quite enough air? Are you straining to get through the long phrases?

We breath about 23,000 times a day! So why is breathing so hard when we sing?
Inside this video I’ll show you a simple way correct these and other breathing problems.

====================
====================

01:19 A major cause of breathing problems when singing is high chest breathing instead of low diaphragmatic breathing.

====================
====================

02:18 How to Sing by Breathing “With” Your Diaphragm
We don’t breath with the diaphragm. We breath with our lungs. However, the diaphragm is the muscle that helps it all happen.

====================
====================

03:58 Your goal is to breath this way when you sing.

It goes like this. Take a breath, and sing your phrase, or do your exercise. [Vocal Demo]

Be sure you don't miss a single video!

You sing very well man! And you explained this very nicely. No one else explained how to inhale and exhale with each phrase.

Thank you! I was practicing doing that, but now I could finally see WHY it is so helpful.

I guess I'll say it here first before commenting about breathing that yesterday, I sang through your exercises for pulled chest-high larynx for the first time right before practicing a song I'm learning and found I had no difficulty at all on a phrase that in the past has always given me trouble; where it suddenly jumps from a low note (chest) to a high note (head), then back to chest voice. My confidence and enjoyment of the song skyrocketed, and it was all so easy. I haven't tried it since but this could be the freedom I've been seeking for my voice my entire singing life, and I'm 66 years old. Thank you for sharing this gem of a technique!

Regarding breathing, I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, but I find that it is helpful to feel an engagement for just a split second before gently pulling my belly button inward toward the back. Otherwise, I find too much escape of air right at the start of singing. Do you feel that engagement when you breathe, or do you discourage it because it introduces unwanted tension?

Wow! I discovered you like fifteen minutes ago and it's amazing! I'm struggling so much with the power of my voice! I'm gonna do your exercices! Hope it's gonna help (don't really have a doubt on it)! Plus, you explain why some things are necessary! Thank you!

Hey man: I’ve figured out a way. Most singers do this. Put your hand on your chest firmly as if you’re singing a heartfelt phrase. This helps to not move the chest and only the stomach to do the moving.

I learned quickly to breathe with my diaphragm by wearing a corset type dress for Renaissance Faire. I was unable to move my chest so I had to figure out a new way to breathe. I've been breathing with my diaphragm ever since. I have a very strong diaphragm and can expel air out at a long length.

Brilliant video and best one out there on this topic. I used your guidance and it worked amazingly well. I saw this last year and it’s been a life saver and great demo. No one else can explain it right or demo it properly. Your channel rocks and it’s now my goto when recording vocals for this years 2021 sessions.

Hello! Great video as usual. So I can support my voice, but after I sing a phrase, I usually have some extra air left that I need to exhale before inhaling for the next phrase. Is there any solution to this?

I love this! Is it common to feel light-headed when singing with your diagram? Sometimes I feel like I am using too much air, or the air is too "powerful"

I do suffer from allergic bronchitis whenever there is a weather change and I am generally unable to take in much air. I struggle a lot singing on the higher scales or higher notes. For example Lata Mangeshkar songs. I have a finale competition next month. I am so tensed about my voice as it is getting strained from singing higher notes on a scale higher than mine.

Mr. Gilmore your channel is probably one of the best, so specific and thoughtful. I also like how "out there" the informations are, it's not like you keep anything for yourself to baiting people on purchasing stuff.

My question is what's your opinion on ribs expanding as a way to breath and support while singing ? Thanks.
