Building Muscle In A Deficit??

Got this question after a story post I made. Can you build muscle in a deficit? Sort of. For most people, it’s going to be unlikely. However here’s three scenarios where I can see it happening.

Also this was one of my favorite gym fits I’ve worn. So if you’re interested the pants came from @queencitysbarbellclub (thanks for sending them to me!) and the top came from @theshellcorp

Training for my first physique comp this year. On a approx, 10000 kJ plan. I’ve lost roughy 6kg (90kg) to 83 kg roughly atm. I’ve lost 1.5 kg of lean muscle out of that total. I’m sitting at 15% body fat with 14 wks to go. There are so many variables, the trick is to find that right balance. Which is easier said than done. Just gotta keep grinding 💪🏽

Even if you aren't these three people it's possible to build muscle in a deficit just not as well as in a surplus(plus if your already well train it's slow in the first place), this being the most difficult for the already lean to really lean which account for about less then 1% of the population (being under 14% bf) it's also the people who least need to be in a deficit.

Can’t you also build muscle in a deficit if it’s like 100 cal deficit from less carbs/fats but eating extra protein plus amino acid rich food? Isn’t that what body recomp is?

Yes you can build muscle on a deficit, its called body recomposition. You eat 100-200 cals under maintenance and 1 gram of protein per lb of body weight.

Nice. I’m pretty sure you can for returning lifters in with number 2. Since lost muscle comes fast due to muscle memory

The third case should be true for everyone, but to lesser degrees as the bodyfat percentage lowers

I've taken the route of eating at a deficit and getting those newbie fats to gains. Moving forward I'm planning to maingaining while staying toned. Is this approach dumb ? Should I bulk instead ?

Yes and the second point, most people don’t train hard enough or consistent enough to be classed as an intermediate or advanced lifter so many will stay in the beginners stage for some years and still make gains ima deficit.
