the start to my EXTREME bathroom makeover

Okay guys…I’m starting the MOST significant renovation project in the That 70s House series yet - the primary bathroom. I'd been avoiding this room for an entire year, and it was finally time for a complete makeover. The en suite was in terrible shape, from warped plastic walls and loose tiles, to cracked grout and a problematic shower area I had never used due to potential leaks — lots is to be done…

I'm excited to share this journey with you and welcome any advice, thoughts, or design ideas you may have. If you're looking for more bathroom makeover inspiration, don't forget to check out Kelsey's completed bathroom transformation. Thanks for joining me on this adventure!

I’ve got a tip! Instead of putting the shower knob/ handle on the back wall put it close to the entrance so you don’t have to fully get in the shower to turn it on. My mother in law just had a big shower built and that is her only regret, putting the handle so far back. She gets soaked trying to warm up her water.

I'm a carpenter and I see many bathrooms. The biggest red flag I see is toilet location. Your gonna have to do a weird side swoop to get past the vanity and around the glass to use the toilet. I would move plumbing to be honest especially if your raising up the whole floor anyway. Aka you’ll have space underneath the floor once you raise it up. Aka a chaise/faux crawlspace to hide pipes.

While your walls are open, add ALL the plugs. It is so worth it. Think about putting them inside the vanity so you can charge shavers and toothbrushes out of sight, above the vanity for hair tools, even next to the toilet (lamps, bidets, charging your phone...). Also, it never hurts to have one or two at normal plug height. Vaccuums, towel warmers and things like that need to be plugged in near the floor. It helps to not just think of what you will need, but what others may want.

For lighting, consider a dimmer or secondary light source that is cozy and warmer toned. That way if you go to the bathroom at night you don't have to have the vanity or pot lights on full blast.

Also, if it is possible and you want a bidet, running warm water to the toilet wall is a nice touch.

If you're going to raise the whole floor anyway you've just given yourself the option to chase plumbing wherever you want it easily, so take advantage! If you want to keep the toilet where it is, given that the toilet outflow is the most hassle and expense to move, consider shifting the vanity to the opposite wall so it runs from the window wall up to the shower edge, and have the shower entrance to the side rather than the end. This will give you a much nicer flow in the room, you wont need to wiggle between the vanity and shower to get at the toilet (especially in the middle of the night, you will stub toes!) And you will get the vanity and mirror up by the window, with room for a chair if you wanted for your MakeUp station. Agree with everyone saying to add in more outlets whilst the walls are open too - small expense for big convenience. Can't wait to see how it turns out, good luck!

As someone who has been watching for years there was something really heartwarming seeing Becky and Kelsey sit and chat through the bathroom ideas 🫶🏽

Make sure to have an slope in the shower area so the water drain properly and doesn't stagnate

In order to move the toilet, I may suggest a wall mounted toilet. Very little work on the concrete, just few inches, but in this way you can have a full-back wall shower

We don’t get to see Becky and Kelsey going on about their thought process together much on camera and I loved that part of them just going back and forth. I know in the end it’s Becky choice but you can see that they really value each other’s opinions and I loved that ❤

how about a horizontal window (think live landscape painting vibe) with thick wood framing instead of vertical. bottom of wood frame can also somehow extend to create the makeup surface area -- and a cool wood mcm style stool (teak maybe) placed in corner in front of mirror would be a great accent.

If you can't find a solution for the wood panels you might look into ceramic tile that mimics wood. My ex installed this in his mother's shower several years back and it actually looked really good. I also imagine that you can source marine use wood...like boats that have all the fancy wood panels...that literally are exposed to moisture all the time. Can't wait to see it.

an antifog mirror above the sink is pretty handy to have, shower controls towards the front and a heated towel rail feel like they'd make the space a lot more user friendly

For a more space effective bath - look into japanese seated bathtubs! They are smaller (less water) but also deeper to actually fully submerge into the water plus the water stays warm for longer. Does not have to be for this bathroom, but maybe some inspiration for a next one!

I know that you might have already decided on that floor plan, but if you level out all the flooring anyway, wouldn't a bathtub be possible anyway? (maybe even a square one made from wood like the ones in Japan haha). you could still do the shower niche above it :) Because I think that's a really nice touch.

With raising the floor, I would have the shower across the entire wall, move toilet where sink is and the sink on other side which extends toward block wall for a make up area. That way sink is seen first by those entering from doorway. Would make a spectacular shower or tub if you would prefer.

Here's my red flags- open plan showers never drain properly in my experience, and you end up with lots of splashback everywhere even if they do. Also towels on hooks don't dry as well as towels on bars, and putting them right next to the open shower like that is going to mean that they're going to get wet. I know this isn't very constructive but I just really really hate open plan showers

I kind of absolutely adored Kelsey's idea for the sink and vanity tbh, it was very creative and I think it would work fantastically with the more organic Onyx wall which, btw, needs to be a thing if it's possible because holy cow it would be SO GOOD.
So yeah, I think that the organic curvy sink and vanity area by the window (which is a great idea to enlarge) would look incredible, tho idk how feasible with all those curves but I'm sure you'd find a solution with it.
And if you are successful at making the window bigger consider getting a few low light plants to decorate the bathroom! I think it would give almost like a rainforest kinda vibe with the amazing reddish wood and onyx wall!!
Plants like a Maranta Leuconeura (and other Calatheas if you're up for the challenge 😅) or even some simple pothos could work wonders in a bathroom.
Overall, your design looked absolutely fantastic and please, yes for all the wood!! It will look like a dream ✨✨

As a fellow Canadian I don’t know how the open concept shower got so much love. Had one in my old house and it was sooo cold. Shower with doors all the way!!

For the wood, it all depends on the type of wood you’re using, I would recommend Teca, and of course don’t forget to give it the proper water resistance treatment, hope it helps. <3

This Reno sounds like it will be fun, for us viewers :) At 66 yrs old I have spent the majority of my life taking showers in a bathtub. There is no splash outside the tub, you just need a liner that goes on the inside of the tub and your pretty shower curtain would hang on the outside. You should probably use frosted glass on the shower divider so you won't have to see the toilet.

Oh my God, the fact that it's been a year breaks my brain. I also moved into my apartment (my perfect home, haha) a year ago, as well! It's wild to think we were both making our houses into homes at the same time.
