Get These Thyroid Labs In Addition To TSH

Why do doctors treat thyroid testing differently from every other hormone in your body? When you look at how doctors test other hormones in your body, you will see what I mean:

When your doctor wants to check your testosterone level, what do they order? They order a testosterone level.
When your doctor wants to check your estrogen level, what do they order? They order an estradiol level which is the most powerful estrogen.
When your doctor wants to check your cortisol level, what do they order? They order a serum cortisol level.

How does this compare to your thyroid? Well, when your doctor wants to check your thyroid what do they order? They order a serum TSH level INSTEAD of your thyroid level!

What's even more interesting is that all of the other hormones I mentioned above are all regulated at the level of the pituitary, just like your thyroid. So if your doctor wanted to, they could check your FSH instead of estrogen, your LH instead of testosterone, and your ACTH instead of cortisol. But guess what? That's not what they do.

Instead, your thyroid is the only pituitary-controlled hormone that is treated differently from every other one and we are told this is because it's better. I have a hard time believing that given that so many thyroid patients (probably you included) are doing so poorly right now.

This is where ordering your free T4 and free T3 step in. Ordering these lab tests allows you to accurately test how much THYROID hormone is in your body, just like you would if you were testing any other hormone!

Ordering your free T4 and free T3, along with the TSH, will give you a more clear picture as to what is going on with your thyroid and should be the standard for thyroid patients.

Just went to an endocrinologist for the first time. She checked TSH, FT4 but told me that she only checks FT3 if someone has HYPERthyroid? She also tried to prescribe me 50 mg levothyroxine, even after my first statement to her was that my PCP gave me that exact prescription and it did absolutely nothing. Which is why I was sent to the endocrinologist!? I told her we needed to come up with a different plan and she just looked at me puzzled? I tried not to tear up in the office, but I’m just so tired of feeling terrible and I have no faith in any of the doctors in my area and no integrative or functional docs are anywhere close to me. It’s just so frustrating!

Try telling that to a doctor fresh out of med school. Did win with getting switched back to Armor Thyroid. Though she did try to argue that it's not normally prescribed for Hypothyroidism. Stood my ground on that told her it works for me. I'm not the typical patient .With me things are backwards

What about a TPO antibody test. How effective would that be?

Can you do a complete video on individuals on T3 only. It seems you avoid this for some reason. My T4 and TSH is crushed due to my brain saying....hey we don't have to produce T4 because we have enough T3. I just want to know in your opinion is there any danger or negative effects of having a crushed T4 and TSH due to taking T3. Currently on 55mcg daily....30mcg am....25mcg before bed. Some people may feel this would keep them up at night but I find I sleep far better taking prior to bed. The body needs energy to sleep.

I agree that FT4 and FT3 are important, but I also believe TSH is important. Sometimes people dismiss TSH and I don't think that's smart. My personal opinion is (when on T4 only) TSH below 2.5 and FT4 and FT3 mid level-ish to 3/4th. I actually do feel that TSH is important though and for me it's been a better indicator later in treatment. Early in treatment, I feel like TSH FT4 and FT3 was very important and indications of things not being in balance. Such as, TSH looked OK, but FT4 was high and FT3 low. Other nutrients were potentially affecting this. Here is another consideration for using FT4 and FT3...is someone's thyroid completely destroyed by Hashimotos, or did someone have the thyroid removed or destroyed. Thus, relying 100 percent on conversion (no help from thyroid). Those people need to ensure the FT4 and FT3 look fairly normal, and TSH may not provide enough info. This may not be a huge amount of people, but important consideration. Most good doctors will let you request TSH, FT4 and FT3 even if they don't use all of them.

I did a thyroid test and the doctor said that my FT4 is too high than normal range which is 34pmol/L. Normal range is 12-22pmol/L
My T4, T3, FT3 and TSH are in normal range.

My symptoms are stiffness, pain and Numbness in my Legs and arms, shakiness, muscle weakness and many more.
How do I treat this
I was referred to an endocrinologist but I have not visited yet.
Pain is too much

My private doc insists on T3 free, military docs not so much. They also refused to test iron levels when my daughter was full blown anemic so. Not saving insurance money when you are destroying a kids organs. Went off base and she needed iron infusions same day as Drs appt. If the doc can not due a simple thyroid panel properly move on, thank them and let them go.

Nothing new here, really. I have been looking all over the Internet for optimum ranges for TSH, free T3, free T4. Any questions are kinda side-stepped, and/or you get crazy differing values! Like for optimum TSH, I have had values: 1) 0.5 - 1; 2) 1.0 - 2.0 3) 1.8 - 3.0, all in mIU/L. Free T4 and T3 even worse, with the added complication that we used a civilized (metric) system for measurements, which is different from the imperial system the Americans and Canada use.
