we in finland also have mandatory military service for at least 6 months, but it's largely because we're a quite small country next to russia, which is seen as a potential threat

Here in Singapore, men above the age of 18 have to serve 2 years in the military too. Well, not just the military. They can also be deployed to the Navy, Police force or the firefighting department.

The US is just weird in our culture about the military. We have so many volunteers we don’t need to draft

In Austria young men have to do military or 'civic duty' after turning 18 and after finishing whatever education they're in while turning 18 (like high school or their apprenticeship).
Civic duty can be anything like assisting in ambulances, helping in countries abroad or (what my partner did) having to work in a prison
Civic duty takes longer than military and you have to apply for the type of duty you want to serve with there being limited spots open in each program
Military also pays better afaik

i guess it depends on what any one school teaches but we did learn some of this in high school. further supplemental wikipedia spirals got me learning all about it more because i'm that type of person. i love knowledge and being highly informed. as someone from the us i couldn't imagine being conscripted NOW (although i'm a woman...not to say they couldn't reinstitute it and include everyone...in fact congress does have the power to do so in cases of 'national emergency') and it's kinda crazy that we did have a draft until vietnam in the 70s. my dad was very close to being drafted but his number was just out of the number range. but the usa isn't in the same position as korea. or at least we haven't been since our own civil war in the 1860s

With the infection of feminism in S.Korea, I hope the ladies will have mandatory service as well. For equality!

For those who are wondering why the us dosent have it, we do, just that we are drafted during a really bad war time. All men at 18 have to sign a paper for the draft. The reason we don’t have it now is cus our military is so big we don’t need a draft as of now
👍

I live in finland and this is also a standard here (They are working on making it mandatory for women too) and I think it makes sense even if you're not in war, anything can happen at any time, it's better safe than sorry.

We have a very similar system in Finland. Defence forces do have people who Make a career out of it, but many go there only for The Time that is required. Its 6-12 months I think?

There is an alternative, social service basically. Anything from nursing, fire department etc, you do your Part that way If you don't want to go to The DF.

You can only refuse without consequences completely for religious reasons, otherwise its House arrest. Unless you are exempt for mental or physical health.

I live in Cyprus and we have mandatory military service too for similar reasons! And for the women we have the mandatory civil service training so we can be able to help in case of war... ❤

Also here in Romania every man from their twenties to their fourties(just if u want) go to the military like a day by day job, I mean u go there in the morning and come home at noon or the next day(it depends on every program) and when u have an event or something u just go there and after it ends u go home. It s kinda fun and there are not strict rules at all because u can play games like rummy with ur coworkers

Isreal is the only country where females must serve too (a perfect example is Gal Gardot, the actress that played Wonderwoman)

It's kinda the opposite to large populated countries like China, US, India and Indonesia. They don't need to worry about military reserves because the numbers who apply voluntarily to be a soldier are high. It's so high to the point the military must limit the applications. Usually these countries have robust career map in their military so working there is quite a promising job.

Greece has mandatory military service too. We don't need to be IN war, but when there's constant threat from a neighboring country, volunteer military just isn't enough. Though when my BIL was in military, 2 years was mandatory, 18 months when my husband was and now it's only 9 months when his nephew did his military service.
