This is a softer way of explaining "DON'T YOU EVER. DRAW WITHOUT A REFERENCE."

Hi! I really enjoy your videos! :) I feel like I am very guilty of these habits too so I gonna try and implement what you said. Btw, loved the intro with the tea brewing!!!

The reason I don’t often use reference is because I observe things that look interesting, remember them and draw them again in my own interpretation. Sometimes I only take parts of it I like and combine it with parts of other things to create one entirely new thing.

I agree that using reference is quite useful, I have a friend of mine who asked me to critique his art and I told him that the anatomy is a bit inaccurate and I advised him to use some reference if he’s having difficulty into learning, but he dismisses this and said he doesn’t really want to use them and wants to avoid them because it was sort of being unoriginal and he wanted to be creative etc. I mean I have no problem with that its just that if he wanted to learn, why avoid using reference amiright?

Tracing is also a great way to learn. Honestly, people typically turn their nose up and say tracing is just copying but thats exactly the point.

Its also a useful trick for authors to deepen their writing skills. Typing or writing out an entire published book or novel, like tracing the lines of your favorite image, will help train your hand and brain to retain the elements you wish to reproduce in your original art.

The only issue that arises from tracing, copying, immitating is if you then try to pass it off as your own completely original work.

b r u h i feel personally attacked, I was picking at my pimple and you said "you know you shouldn't be picking at your pimples..." *pika face* but great video :D

maybe you are right. I generally don't use reference cause I want to draw from imagination and use perspective and other things so that I don't just copy the contours of the reference. I just don't want to be dependent on references. Ex.- Proko uses a lot of references but his imagination drawings are pretty bad

Loved this video. The fact that it was bite-sized and not overdone. The tea brewing. The tiny clay teapot. 10/10 :)

1. Not using reference.
2. Not thumbling.
3. Zooming in.
