Artists who understand color have a consistent style to their work. Picking color exclusively from a photo steals that practice from you and leads to less consistent and less unique work.

Gotta understand lighting, materials, what's really happening there, in real life... then make your own stylistic take based on the skills acquired, if anything.

I do like the approach of using your eye instead of the color picker. When you use your eye to choose color, you are training yourself to see and interpret different values, saturation, chroma, and hues!

For anyone that does colorpick, give this method a try. You dont need agree with this method either, as art has no specific way at the end of the day!

I'm going to steal this philosophy from you.

I think another thing to note when using the eye dropper tool is that the color grabbed is not always accurate which is also a reason why the colors can look off.

This is also good advice when drawing fictional character even from character sheet with flat colors included. These are used in animation when colors need to be consistent from frame to frame. In fanart or still art in general, eyeballing color makes it fit the background and ambience better and more natural then adding overlay layer etc.

Ive stolen some really horrible samples from reference photos. So knowing what colors to use and not use is a choice too. Also using the tool to grab a color and then tweeking it in the mixer also.

Maybe it’s best to use a colour finder tool from then on - a flat square with a hole in the middle - teaches you how to search for a specific colour instead of copying it.

Thanks. I was feeling lazy for not doing that.

I notice a trend lately when a young artist post their fanarts on social media and they failed to portray dark skintone accurately, resulting them getting dogpiled by other users. Most of the comments were like “Just use the color picker tool!” “The color picker tool is there!”

It’s so infuriating & no matter how much I tried to explain that it’s not their intention & failures is part of the process, and using color picker is a bad habit in the long run. They won’t listen & accused the artist for whitewashing instead.

What about using the eyedropper tool on a compeltelt unrelated image to build a color pallette?

This isn't necessarily true - I really like mixing my own colors intuitively, but since photoshop still hasn't got a great opportunity to do so and my mixoo palette vanished somehow, sometimes it's the only way to stay in the flow digitally - still gotta be aware of choosing the right colours and make your own decisions, but I don't really think the "Übergänge" are the problem - I really admire what you're doing, but sometimes Proko and you are too judgemental concerning how to paint imho

So steal and then make better transitions and edges, got it.

To be fair whenever you draw Epsteins favorite client (clinton) its always going to look odd 😂

Well first I "steal" the color to see where it is on the color weel then adjust it based on the atmosphere

That's why I am not that big a fan of digital painting. While I like digital art, it will never be as tactile or pure as traditional art for me. There are no shortcuts in traditional art

Art is art. Who are you, the art police? I don’t draw from reference, but like, why does it matter how one person chooses to do their art versus another? As long as they aren’t just straight up tracing.
