LOL and yes.. I ran SETI at home on my old HP Pavilion computer. A whopping 133mhz CPU! -- It was in the living room so I'd watch TV and end up watching the screen saver on commercial breaks. It was a different era.

As a kid I ran that program for a few hours and stared at it intently as if the Aliens were going to show up on my screen and say hello. Eventually I got bored, but it's really one of the only things in my childhood I am very proud of. I got to help science in a tiny way. It made me feel like I was part of something greater. Humanity.

one thing I love about the idea of sending signals out into space is that it’s so human. since people could write, one of the most universal messages has been “I was here”. I feel like these signals we send and our search for such signals speak to this desire, whatever it may be. maybe it’s a longing to be remembered, maybe it’s a part of our social coding, but I find it totally fascinating whatever it is

About the signals being gibberish, the movie Contact resolved that in quite a smart way: each impulse is either 1 or 0, with a specific input for newline. Enter all the 1s as a dot and all the 0s as empty space, make new lines when required, and you draw a picture.

Then, picture based 2D communication is possible, even with civilizations who are ignorant of each other languages.
