My favorite put but an authentic recipe uses molasses. My fav combo is to use molasses and honey in place of the karo. You can also make this pie without an egg (also traditionally) which makes a smoother and less gelatinous filling.

Here's a recipe from my past. My maternal grandmother was Dunkard, an off shoot of Amish, from mid west Ohio.My mother made a very simple 8x8 cake with a separate sauce. If memory serves, it was called One egg cake with Yankee sauce. I had the recipe at one time, but my copy has disappeared. Might you have heard of this? The sauce was a one and done and it could not be brought back for seconds and thirds.
