My problem is when do I use an and when do I use auf and when do I use bei?

"Can I get a table by the window?" in German is: Kann ich einen Tisch an dem (am) Fenster bekommen? (Here "an" is "by" in English)
"We meet at the entrance" in German is: Wir treffen uns an der Eingang. (Here "an" is "at" in English)
"The city is located on the border" in German is: Die Stadt liegt an der Grenze. (Here "an" is "on" in English)

Similarly, "The laptop is on the table" in German is: Der Laptop liegt auf dem Tisch. (Here "auf" is "on" in English)
"I work at Microsoft" in German is "Ich arbeite bei Microsoft". (Here "bei" is "at" in English)

I am trying put as much serious efforts as much as possible to understand this but losing out, I would appreciate with all my heart if someone could explain me on when to use the above mentioned prepositions. Is there a logic or is it something that must be remembered. Thanks.

ich habe in der Sprachschule gelernt, das ist falsch aber viele Deutsche sagen so...(vllt Umgangsprach)
aber in der Regel ist "Woran denkst du?" richtig oder??
