You're more aware of the space your bag is occupying when wearing it on your chest. On your back in a packed train you might be unaware when you hit someone by accident. Its just a common courtesy kind of situation.

Same as if you're sitting down, place the bag on your lap instead of on the seat next to you to ensure someone can sit there during busy routes.

I also agree that in other countries where theft is more of an issue, wearing a bag up front on busy trains could deter valuables being stolen.

This is crowd etiquette and one I had to learn from experience. It was that one time during rush hour and I never expected there to be so much people and we were even inside a green car.

Green car cost a little more than regular cars, because you can sit but in that instance, we had to stand in the aisle because the seats were full. My backpack was behind me and my rollers on my hand.

It was only a matter of time before my bag would hit someone and it surely did. The uncle behind me motioned his head towards me, and even if I don't turn to look at him, I was certain from the corner of my eye he was giving me dagger looks.

So since that experience, I automatically transfer my bag in front because I expect trains to become full in the next station stops.

One time I wore my bag like that on a very packed train in Japan while going home, my zipper got stuck on a lady’s bag and me and my friend spent 3 minutes getting it unstuck. I missed my stop and had to get off to take a different train back to my house
