Hey guys! Today I'm setting up the cornerstone of my homelab - a Dell R710 that I plan on using for virtualization. I go through the physical setup first, then setting up Microsoft Hyper-V 2016 Core as my hypervisor.

Hey guys! So this too much longer to put together than I planned, and I ended up rambling more than I like. Hopefully you find it helpful since good (and complete) info on setting up Hyper-V 2016 Core outside of an AD environment is scarce.

I have a Dell R710 bought it back in 2015 its been running 24/7. It has 8x 750GB WD Black drives in RAID6. To begin with was ESXi 6.0 (from dell driver & support site) recently upgraded to ESXi 6.7 running well. Make sure to use the lifecycle controller to update the BIOS and firmware as well. This made a big difference. Much prefer ESXi. I have 3 windows based VMs and bunch of Linux VMs as well.

iDRAC enterprise cards can be picked up for about $20 for these machines. I recommend doing it because it will make things easier for you down the road.

Amazing video! Thank you! There is apparently a script out there HVRemote or something which is supposed to do a lot of these settings for you automatically.

LOVED your video. Very well done. Unfortunately I could not get my W10 to connect so I went back to installing the 2016 GUI on the server with only Hyper-V role installed. I then added my VMs without a problem. I know it adds more overhead, but it just makes life a lot easier. Thanks again for the video. It was worth a shot.

thank you very much for sharing, it was very complicated trying to connect a hyper-v server that was out of domain, I was giving credentials delegation error, but with your video I could solve it. :-)

I know this is old but as far as the virtual switches, here is what is important to understand about each type.

Public: means it is tied to a physical network interface and available externally (wired or wireless)
Internal: means it is accessible to the physical box and virtual machines, but not externally (isolated from external network)
Private: means it is only available to the virtual machines and the physical box does not see the network (Isolated from external and host)

Think of it like you are setting up VLANs on your Hyper-V Host.

I'm really interested in using hyper v for my new home lab I'm setting up. Problem is that it seems like a real hassle to manage compared to esxi or promox. Would rather have a web gui for management.

Did you try a Dell-specific ISO of ESXi? That might help you with installing ESXi.

I imagine this has already been said but if you want to run CMD commands from PS and they won't run in PS for some reason you can use "cmd /c".
For instance if you wanted to control a service with SC instead of the equivalent in PS, PS will throw an error if you just run "sc". But you run "cmd /c sc" the sc will run and immediately exit back to the PS prompt.

Hey I've had a problem lately. My resolution is stuck at 640 X 480 do you think you can help me with that. I have windows server 2016 on my R610

TBH, Hyper-V is like running a stripped-down Windows Server 2016. It's still Windows Server with it's services and GUI taking up more memory and disk space than what would ESXi take. It's like installing the role on a full, licensed Windows Server.
