Dyslexia is also known as and called reading disability.

According to research between 5-15 % of American child and adults have dyslexia which is between 14.5 million and 42.5 million people.

Dyslexia is a learning disorder which involves difficulty reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words.

Dyslexia affects areas of the brain that processes language.

Dyslexia has no affect on overall intelligence and many successful people are intact dyslexic.

Before a child enters school it can be difficult to recognize the signs of dyslexia but when a child enters school a teacher may be the first to notice that a child could have dyslexia

The symptoms of dyslexia are different for each age range, before school, school age and teens and adults.

Let’s take a look at before school first

The symptoms of dyslexia in children before school are

* Late talking
* Learning new words slowly
* Problems forming words correctly, such as reversing sounds in words or confusing words that sound alike
* Problems remembering or naming letters, numbers and colors
* Difficulty learning nursery rhymes or playing rhyming games

The symptoms of dyslexia in children school age are

* Reading well below the expected level for age
* Problems processing and understanding what he or she hears
* Difficulty finding the right word or forming answers to questions
* Problems remembering the sequence of things
* Difficulty seeing (and occasionally hearing) similarities and differences in letters and words
* Inability to sound out the pronunciation of an unfamiliar word
* Difficulty spelling
* Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
* Avoiding activities that involve reading

And the symptoms of dyslexia in teens and adults are

* Difficulty reading, including reading aloud
* Slow and labor-intensive reading and writing
* Problems spelling
* Avoiding activities that involve reading
* Mispronouncing names or words, or problems retrieving words
* Trouble understanding jokes or expressions that have a meaning not easily understood from the specific words (idioms), such as "piece of cake" meaning "easy"
* Spending an unusually long time completing tasks that involve reading or writing
* Difficulty summarizing a story
* Trouble learning a foreign language
* Difficulty memorizing
* Difficulty doing math problems

Hello Authentic Mental Health Community, are you dyslexic or know anyone who has been diagnosed with dyslexia?

As a young child I was diagnosed with dyslexia from a psychologist . Phonetics really messed me up concerning spelling words and reading. I learned by memorization and patterns of words. For example I can read a combination of letters and numbers that form sentences . I have never received help for dyslexia. When I am tired my dyslexia it's much worse. For example if I am reading I may see letters either reversed or reversed and upside down. My short-term memory is excellent and my long-term memory is fine. I went to nursing school and I'm fascinated by medicine . I was an honors student .When I graduated from from college I went on to take my nursing boards.I and did quite well. Today I still have a lot of issues that are related to dyslexia. One of my biggest problems is spelling. I can't spell to save my life. There are other issues with dyslexia . It has had an effect on my self esteem . For my entire life my self-esteem has been extremely low .The way I learned was so different than everybody else . I am left handed but learned to write like a right handed person . I do most things like a right handed person . My dyslexia has never been addressed except when I was diagnosed with it. There was no follow up . Teachers were never informed ect . I really had to struggle thru some subjects in high school . I also have zero self confidence . My I.Q. was tested at the same time . I have a medium high I. Q. You are correct that a person with dyslexia can be intelligent . My method of learning is straight out different than other people .

Interesting I thought Dyslexia was only on the visual level but I guess it's auditory also.

I have number and letter dyslexia, I found out when I was in 3rd grade. It’s harder and takes me longer sometimes to process stuff, sometimes I have to read the passage or do the problem multiple times to make sure I have it correct, and I cannot read aloud- but I’ve managed to keep college reading and math levels since 5th grade.

Now as an adult (40), for the past few years I’ve come to notice symptoms that I believe are a mild form of dyslexia. First off, I’m diagnosed with adult ADHD mixed type, and had gone undiagnosed all throughout childhood where I had struggled with my schooling and the workload. I’ve noticed when I’m reading now and in recent years, that I sometimes accidentally skip part of a sentence and finish reading the sentence directly beneath it. The same thing happens when I’m reading aloud. My handwriting a script/cursive is not concrete and I have a handwriting style that changes without reason. My grammar and spelling is quite good, but when reading, punctuation may sometimes throw me off and I’ll tend to read the sentence over and over again trying to understand if I’m misunderstood the writing or if it’s improper grammar. As a child and teens (all throughout my schooling and university years) my reading was incredibly slow. Aside from daydreaming, when attentive my vocabulary was limited and I found reading to be a tedious chore. Luckily, I was prescribed medication a decade ago for my ADHD which has helped me significantly, but it doesn’t totally complete the whole picture. My executive functioning can sometimes be distorted. When it comes to reading, or speaking a description of something, I sometimes notice that I’ve used incorrect or opposite pronouns (he/she, left/right) and realize it after I’ve spoken. I have also noticed that I sometimes distort fragments of a word within a sentence into a new word. For example :
“ Bring that coupon
so you can save money.”
I might see this (this is a hypothetical example) but I might see “Brave upon money” or something of that nature. I also have a hard time and always have with auditory processing. If someone gives me instructions verbally, or driving directions, you could bet that I will NOT remember but a sentence or two. As for my intellectual capacity, I’ve been told, “you’re one of the smartest people I know.” It’s a nice compliment, and I believe it, but it’s more in my capacity of intellectual data that I’ve accumulated and I have a very different way of thinking and explaining (I think in metaphors or analogies and universal concepts). But when it comes to the reading, reading aloud, or describing a scenario without preparation, words and letters get swapped.

What does this sound like to you?
