Signs and Symptoms of Dyslexia (Part 1) - Dyslexia Connect

There are many symptoms of dyslexia, such as poor reading accuracy, skipping words, difficulty with letters and letter combinations, flipping b, d, p and q, and many more. I discuss many of the most common signs and symptoms of dyslexia in this video.

It is important to remember that not every dyslexic displays the same symptoms of dyslexia. Some dyslexics may display two or three symptoms of dyslexia, while a different dyslexic may display ten different symptoms.

Since there are so many signs and symptoms of dyslexia, we must not assume that an individual is not dyslexic, simply because they do not display one specific symptom.

Once you learn what the symptoms of dyslexia are, dyslexia becomes much easier to identify.

When I'm typing or writing I forget important words. Then I reread and realize the sentence makes no sense.

I don't know if I'm dyslexic. I'm in 8th grade and i have had straight A's all my life, I'm great at math, science, and logical thinking, but i can't spell to save my life, my grammar is non-existent, and reading has become nearly impossible, it takes my 2-3 times longer to read one page compared to my friends (thank god for audible). I have never had to jumbling of letters, but when i read a number/time such as 3:47 ill end up saying 7:43 sometimes.I love learning and gaining knowledge, but reading is form of tourture for me. Idk why this is and I'm sick and tired of giving my best and having my parents yell at me for not practicing enough. Can someone help

Has anyone else experienced an inability to enjoy new music the first time they hear it? An audio book I listened to implied dyslexics might not have an ability most people do which allows most people to enjoy music they had never heard before. I got this from a book called "This is your brain on music." In one part they explained how the brain can derive pleasure form music it has never heard before. Its has something to do with a timing center of the brain that anticipates and enjoys the completion of patterns in rhythm and melody. In another section, it mentions in passing that dyslexia is (or can be) a defect in this timing center. All my life I had this issue and never realized it. The first time I listen to a new CD, my experience is rather bland and my memory of the experience is almost always "Mehhhh..." On the second or third listen, suddenly its pleasant to me. Years back, I bought a CD by a favorite artist and listened to it. I didn't enjoy it AT ALL and even offered to give it to a friend. Then, on the day I was to give it to the friend, I played it one more time and I enjoyed EVERY song. There was not one song that I didn't really like. It was a favorite artist after all so I should have known better than to give it away so quickly. But I have had little experiences like that all my life.

I have following symptoms
1) reading accuracy
2) change or add words while reading out loud
2) ignoring punctuation
3) reading is tiring
4) have problem telling left from wright (if I do not focus)
5) leave out letters a lot while writing (most in my mother language less so in English)
6) have hard time telling the time on clock
7) mistakes d and b while handwriting
8) get lost in large paragraphs and do not remember where I was (while reading)
9) constantly have to read several times to get the text
8) randomly forget how to spell words like "beautiful"
"Because" ...
9) Make stupid mistakes in math like 5+3=7 if I do not check.

1) I'm good really good at logical problems, geometry, stereometry
2) I have really good listening skills, I think I got this from studying biology and chemistry without reading at home just from listening to the teacher
3) I'm passionate about art, thinking of going to art school
4) I didn't struggle learning English (started at age 7) but I am now struggling to learn German (started at age 15)

I'm 17, I'm in 12th grade.
I can't find any dyslexia tests in my country. I want to continue studying in USA. I took SAT and got 540 at verbal (only managed to finish 2 texts out of 5 in reading) and 700 at math (I love geometry and stereometry)

My daughter has all the signs she was diagnosed with dyslexia 2 weeks ago after a very long diagnostic period. She only rarely spells entire words backwards or parts of sentences. Like she was trying to write you but she put ouy. It will take her a really long time to copy a really easy sentence and the words will be written wrong. She has a lot of accomodations now thankfully and a dyslexia teacher. She also is a great artist she has a brilliant mind and imagination.

Oh my word!

I have a very intelligent child. She is smart, spoke 2 languages by age 2. She plays chess, and loves maths.
She is in Gr1 this year and the first term has been a nightmare.
She's been begging to read since she was 3. But suddenly she refuses to do it.

She keeps inverting letters and numbers. Cannot remember a word from one page to the next and has the weirdest thing where she can spell a word out loud (after lots and lots of practice), but when she has to write it down, it just isn't right. The letters are there, but most often so jumbled up that it's not even a word.
She also gets majorly confused with the sounds of the A, E, I, O, U. She will confuse them in words all the time.

We got her first term rapport yesterday. She had full marks on her Maths, even with the number inversions, she still got all the sums correct.
But her reading was graded at only a 6. Which is only a little above passing. And she got a fail grade for the spelling and Grammer parts.

This is the same kid who watches Youtube video's on bridge building and other scientific things. The same kid that learns at a rapid speed.

I came here, expecting to not find an answer, just trying out different things to find out how I can help her.

And this video is almost to a T correct.

I am so excited! Sounds weird, but, now we can get her seen by someone who can 100% make sure and then we can truly help her!

Thank you for your video, DIagnosed with Dyslexia at a young age. While you described the symptoms I just remembered the struggle with my teachers and laugh. Learning to read by my self has improved my writing abilities among others, however, in many cases I have the issue that I change the character's name and when another person reads the book they get really confused about which character I am speaking of. Funnily enough, I tend to read and write in English more than Spanish (native tongh) as I find it easier.

I found the information on the all the signs very interesting. Phonics is so important in reading and not learning it can be most frustrating.

I'm 37 and have a Master's degree in Social Work. I have struggled all my college years with writing tasks. In my first job out of grad school I struggled with writing tasks (takes me longer to complete). I got written up a few times and continued struggling for a few years and eventually got fired from my job. The symptoms felt like ADHD so I requested an assessment and the psychologist said I don't have ADHD but I do have difficulty with reading comprehension and this impacts my writing abilities. So here I am, learning that I have symptoms consistent with (mild) dyslexia. Feels validating and reignites my motivation to continue searching for a career/job that's a good fit for the way my brain operates.

I do the first one but with numbers mostly. If a number is 756, i tend to write it 657. I didn't know that was a rare form. I was formally diagnosed in my last year of college and it made a huge difference. Simply giving me more time on tests in a smaller testing environment let me go from a C average student to straight A's. I also started reading out loud (by myself) and recording myself. I'd play it back for better comprehension.

My daughter has dyslexia and loves reading and has always been advanced in reading...go figure. Can't read a analog clock very well or read long numbers though...

I still write words backwards sometimes, without even noticing it. I'm sitting here listening to everything you're saying and I'm just like "Omg!! yes, that's so me" to nearly everything you say. Not only that but having to check what I'm writing right now three times to make sure it makes sense lol.

I have the reading accuracy symptom when reading out loud. Only thing that I don’t do is ignore punctuation. But, I definitely jumble words around and it always annoyed the heck out of me. Recently rediscovered this trait while reading books to my kids. Strange how this happens. I read for fun. Read novels and such and in my head it flows as it should, yet when I read out loud, i sound somewhat illiterate at times. 🤦🏻‍♂️

I get a lot of the reading symptoms but not a lot of the writing symptoms, but I did struggle a lot with them as a young kid

I recognise all of those signs from my formative years. Written off by school 50 years ago as laze, "doesn't try". Although dyslexia was talked about in school, somehow they did not pick me out. Fortunately I had the beneficial side of dyslexia, that has seen me through life very well.

I have a really time reading phone numbers in my head and out loud, I always seems to mix up the numbers even when I told myself a thousand times what the phone number was I will write it wrong.
When I read I will forget what I just read and the page starts to look like it’s blending together.
I also have a very hard time with my rights and lefts. I have to think very hard about it and sometimes use my hands to remember.
In speech I forget words a lot.
I love to write but most of the time my sentences end up jumbled and I have to rewrite the sentences all the time.
