Hey everyone! This is my personal experience with flying ESFs which I'm sure other players have experienced as well so I'm not gonna pretend I'm an excellent at flying or in the game. 😂

After many hours of solo practice, warp gate duels, watching guides, and even tagging along with an air-specialist platoon for group training, I spent a grand total of 80 hours flying a scythe outside of VR. If I had to guess:

55 of those hours were spent getting absolutely destroyed by veterans of the sky who could 1v1 me with an A2G nosegun and fly away with more than half their health without using fire suppression.

20 of those hours were spent facing new pilots who I could practically kill by firing once and watching them panic-fly into a tree, mountain or building.

Only 5 hours were spent facing people in evenly matched dogfights.

On paper that sounds like an awful investment of over 100 hours (including practice.) However, the majority of those veterans who wrecked me were beyond kind; offering advice in chat, tutoring sessions, and often allowing for truces instead of repeatedly stomping me, assuming they weren't trying to win an alert.

The advice I got from them I tried my best to pass down to the new pilots I encountered, which netted me a couple friends. It also never got old watching those newbies crash because I spooked them, knowing I used to do the same.

Lastly, those closely matched dogfights were absolutely the highlight of over 900 hours of play, at least in terms of solo activities. Nothing felt more rewarding, and often times there were plenty of rematches for both sides to taste sweet victory.

In the end, I decided I'd enjoy piloting Valkyries more, but flying ESFs is an incredible experience if you're okay with frequently being absolutely, completely, totally obliterated. Which, you're playing Planetside 2, so I'd hope that's the case.

I don't fly in planetside because i used to play flight games like Elite Dangerous, and star citizen, and i absolute hate the way planetside flies, so my boots remain glued to the planet, and i honestly wouldnt have it any other way.

The airgame is filled with veterans with years of experience. It doesnt matter how much you practice, you are playing catch up and it is their game you are in. If you manage to find some fun, and can learn from your mistakes and deal with the frustration, there is fun to be had, but you will die a lot in A2A. Expect a 0.1 KD in duels.

kinda funny that this is the first reccomended video when you type in : "planetside 2 how to abuse air to ground 2022"
lol how the best esf tipp is to stay away from that shinanigans since thermal objectives are no longer a thing... now imagine me beeing a veteran esf pilot from the beginning of the game history... every 3 years logging in for once to check out if i could enjoy myself in planetside 2 just to get frustrated when flying after 5 mins and repeating the deinstall process when you're used to 28 killstreaks in the cockpit you just cant take the current state of the air game'
