Is finding and reading an existing CAN Bus network on an OEM car tricky?

In this [FREE LESSON] on CAN Bus Communications, Zac walks us through what some key considerations are when connecting to your vehicle’s CAN Bus network. He talks about establishing the high and low CAN network signals and how using an Oscilloscope to read and understand what the CAN Bus network is doing, eg, reading CAN Bus messages.

Zac also covers getting the data onto your computer and what you should be looking for when trying to locate CAN Bus wiring.

CAN bus is such wonderful technology. Our team has only recently been truly utilizing it to its full extent with dedicated CAN sensor modules for things like strain gauges, tire temp sensors, etc. It has really revolutionized how we treat data acquisition

Great job! Will you make a video about how to learn which ID includes which message?

Good video. Very informative. Let me ask you. How could be possible to read the light signals, like low beam high beam parking lights brake signals turn signals dome loght and reverse? Could be possible read those signals maybe using a arduino or similar hardware? Thanks

I guess that might be also a good way to find the CANH CANL pair if we just measure the bus resistance while the ignition is off, because the resistance should be around 60Ohms. Of course this won't tell which one is the high and low, but still this might help in pointing out the wires we need. I am not sure how big is the deviation and changes between different CAN applications and indurties where it is used, so based on standard this should be true.

Wouldn't an rms voltmeter help you figure out which line is high and low?

Hi.just watched this, very informative.i fitted a 03 pd130 engine asz to a 08 vivaro.I know now i should have piggy backed of the original ecu.. needless to say the dash is not happy and lit lit up like a Xmas tree. I tryd joining the bus wires together but no joy..is there something I can put in between to get it talking to each other? Be nice to get the rev counter working..and dash lights off..any help would be greatly appreciated..

I'm interested in those booms you have for the scope. I've been looking forever and can not find one.

How do you go about integrating a aftermarket ECU such Holley, Haltech, Megasquirt, Speeduino or even a GM v-8 ecm, etc… into for instance a Porsche 996 for a LS swap ? So that guages, AC ABS, etc would operate normally. I assume that means that the body ECMs needs to know about engine data from its ECU . That same question could also asked in most modern vehicles who use CAN BUS and one or more body ECMs, like any of the modern pickups out there. The general idea of Can seems easy to understand but understanding it’s language and Its ability to communicate between different brands of engines and ECUs going into different brand of vehicles and their chassis ECUs isn’t. I’ve heard use of a CAN modulator, Shield, gateway and more but tell the truth it’s very confusing to understand that part. Not the wiring or general idea of CAN but it’s cross brand integration.

Thats all very well reading the bus traffic but what do those messages actually mean ?, its like reading a book in a foreign language
