Can Switch 2 Live Up to the Switch

The Switch has been Nintendo's most successful home console, and it's currently on track to become not only their most successful handheld, but possibly the top selling system of all time surpassing the PS2. With this much success and momentum and going into a new system launching next year, I have to wonder: Can the Switch 2 (or whatever it is Nintendo ends up releasing) live up to the Switch's success?

All I care about is backwards compatibility. As long as Switch 2 does that then everything else is a bonus.

I'm excited for the Switch 2 to release just so YouTubers can stop speculating about it.

More power, better ergonomics and backwards compatible, that's all it needs.

I’m definitely getting the switch 2 when it drops. Not even concerned about the games it comes out with. I waited years to get a switch. Won’t make that mistake again. I own a ps5 but it’s for watching movies I guess 😒

Nintendo has a strong track with handhelds. The Switch 2 will be fine especially since there are no other handheld consoles (Steam Deck, ROG Ally, Legion Go, etc. are PCs, not consoles).

I was in the middle of early family life when the switch launched so money was tight and it took 5 years for a purchase of a switch and BotW to become available in the budget. Kids are older and things have have changed, I can't wait to pre-order the next system.

As long as the switch 2 can play switch 1 games with higher fps and graphics it WILL be a success

I know a lot of people especially YouTubers are excited about the Switch 2. Personally I'm still very happy with my regular Switch. It plays the games I love. I have no reason to get the new system until they come out with a new Legend of Zelda game for it.

As long as they don't name it the switch 2 they should be fine. Despite the fact that the Wii U was a good product it was very confusing for the general consumer. Working at Toys R Us I can assure you that a lot of people thought the Wii U was just an add-on as a touch screen control for the Wii

If it is another hybrid console, and they price it at $350, then maybe. At $400, it could break 100M lifetime sales with the right games, but I doubt it will reach the success of the Switch. (If they introduce a strategic price cut later down the line, that may help sales enough to match the Switch as well.) They will also need to give it lots of time on the market, just like they have with the Switch.

I have a day one launch switch I had for a time till the TotK Oled came out, due to my love for Zelda and the fact the Oled upgrade woulda been great I instantly pre ordered it when I could. I also might buy the Switch Lite Zelda Edition just for the sakeds of it being Zelda lol

As for passing the PS2 its worth remembering the PS2 had multifunction with DVD at a time that was taking off, and the DS and Switch are a gaming focused system only.

WILD IDEA: yes... have the Switch 2 get all the various upgrades to meet modern standards. But here is a proposed kicker: throw in a "Retro Slot" that will accommodate DS and 3DS cartridges along with the SD Card slot. BAM! The Switch 2 is not only brand new but is also RETRO. This would give Nintendo a chance to recapture all those previous owners/players who have a DS/3DS that has worn out. Both Old & New in one system. That is my Wild Idea.

Very insightful. Makes me think that Nintendo would not want to make the switch 2 backwards compatible with the switch.

The switch 2 if it comes with backwards compatibility will be even more successful than the switch. That's because already having the best exclusive titles, the more powerful hardware will make it possible for massive triple A franchises to launch their games on the switch 2, making it the console with the best catologue of games and thus destroying the competition.

The switch 2 could surpass the switch if it's powerful and has other things that would make it nicer to have.

Once switch 2 comes out, switch lite will drop to 89.99 and it’ll still sell.

Nintendo has tightened its grip on the combination of success: self-reliance, a hybrid gaming device, the release of many high-quality exclusives that meet the public’s demand, and Nintendo has Pokemon.

The next switch also wont have the back catalogue to pull from that the OG had via the Wii U. And since the "definitive" edition of MarioKart, Smash, etc released on the OG I struggle to think what the new one will have to offer many owners of the switch to entice them to upgrade. Some gimmick with the magnetic attachments might now be enough. We shall see.
