This is great advice. I have done this with my camp fires for years now. I often have to tell other campers of the importance of dowsing your fire with water before leaving it overnight or whilst you are away. This means the charcoal remains and whilst it is still wet, when you start another fire on top it soon dries out and you have more coals to cook with quicker than you'd have them before. I have also saved my coals for another camping trip as it makes for a quicker camping fire.

Yeah, been using the metal can with a lid for years to reuse my charcoal on my road trips for our next fire or meal. Nice and simple without wasting water 💦 our making a mess🔥🏕 🇨🇦

Genius!!! Seems so obvious now you demonstrate it. Now the big question. Do I actually have the motivation to do it after several beers (and would it be safe if I did 😂) ?

An alternate method is putting charcoal in a metal container with an air tight lid (food tin/steel billy, etc) - starving the oxygen from the fire. Although I've had best results with this water quench method🌊 - I think because its cooling down faster (presses pause faster) and therefore less of the charcoal energy is wasted (with the metal can method it still burn for a bit until starved of oxygen). What do you reckon?

Just put the coals in a metal pot with a wet t shirt to seal the lid and pour water over the pot.
I do this a lot .steak only takes 8 minutes. Chicken takes ages so not much charcoal left
