this is the part of the game that still hits me the hardest. not the final duet, or the ending, but this.
i think it's because the scene is so _simple._ there's no grand theatrics or flashbacks, there's no intense music or visuals. it's just.. a scared kid who misses his sister. this is the culmination of sunny's grief from the last four years that he's repressed. there is no one here to watch. everything is quiet. and he cries. he finally just... cries.
i've seen the ending of this game so many times now and this cutscene _still_ gets me close to tears.

Looking closely at the animation of him playing, he actually plays the notes realistically (in sync with the music). Really impressive attention to detail, adding to the immersion.

when i first saw this theme it absolutely broke my heart, even before sunny fell to his knees. I could tell something was wrong the moment he started playing

This scene absolutely broke me... Sunny finally breaking down and letting four years worth of emotions out when playing the very song him and Mari were supposed to perform that day... Absolutely heartbreaking it had me sobbing so hard. This game is so bittersweetly beautiful

as a stringed instrument player, the way he plays is heartbreaking. you can hear the shakiness in the vibrato, the trembling and looseness of the bow across the strings... anyone who has played a stringed instrument while upset and crying knows that it sounds exactly like this. his emotional state just makes it sound empty and sad, as he has no emotion left to pour into the music itself.
