Rex, absolutely love the bevel gauge as a guide. I think I invariably increase the honing angle over time, which should hopefully be corrected with a reference angle from the gauge!

Also, an edge that isn't exactly 25° will still cut.

As you drop your wrist, doesn’t that make a rounded surface?

If you drop your wrist as you push, won’t that grind in a curve? And isn’t that bad?

Amen! It's only as complicated as we want no make it. I've been doing my chisels this way for a few years since learning from your videos. I recently acquired a honing guide for $5 from a swap meet, but kinda like embracing the "imperfection" from free handing it.

You seem like a great dude. Wishing you success

It's a skill that can easily picked up, just like whatever you're using the chisel for

It took me a lot of practice but I finally got my technique dialed in and I haven’t bothered with my guides in a while now. It’s really fun to sharpen your tools and knifes freehand and I think it just takes practice. The trick for me was to check for the burr often and make sure it was consistent. I know I’m not getting a perfect geometry but for me I don’t really mind sharpening more often to keep my hand tools sharp. Thanks for the nice videos Rex, I always enjoy them

Rex... you have changed my total approach to my projects. Hand tools really do make life easier in some situations.. . you are a legend, and I am very appreciative of your efforts.. thank you.

don't know why but laying it flat on the stone to get the burr has never worked on my planer blades, there's always the tiniest bit of burr left there which will dent the blade again as soon as it hits the wood and the result is a surface that has a fuckton of stripes going along it, so I lift the heel of it the tiniest degree and always leave the burr on the bewel side and it works beautifully for about 500 meters of planing, took me about 2 years to get the technique right since I'm pretty much self taught, my boss showed how to do it once but he doesn't give a fuck anymore he's been running this company for 60 years and he did it horribly

A good set of diamond plates (such as sharpton) should cut any edge with 5 or so passes each grit
...unless you've completely trashed your edge.

You'll know if you've got it right based on feedback. Catching the entire bevel will give more resistance and you'll notice more slurry coming out of the steel on lower grits.

You can also stop and pivot the steel back and forth to remind yourself of the feel it gives with full contact. Another thing you can do is have a finger right on the edge to get a feel for how flat the edge is sitting on the stone.

There are N videos collectively having at least N+1 contradictory opinions on how to sharpen and how not to sharpen!

If you dont pull it on the stone you get less of a bur but thats a fast enough fix that it doesnt matter lol.

How much time do you need to manually sharpen a new blade?

Do you shave, plane or sand your head?

Yes yes very easy to sharpen free hand in my experience it's lightning fast compare to putting on wheels but you know I have my reasons to put wheels cuz I can push it with one hand watching tv ehh I just can't get rid of the wheels by the end of day that's what I do will all tools. It's really common sense to free hand while working it's a matter what's in my reach and state of mind, tired then wheels and tv need to stand than quick hand sharpen.
