Sharpening #1 (freehand)

Welcome to my freehand sharpening series, please pour yourself a nice cold beverage and see how I put a hair whittling edge on my knives without and fancy guided systems, and without fancy high dollar stones.

You can get this same set up for around $100-$135 depending on sales and where you buy from.

Thanks again, please remember to rate comment and subscribe! I'm trying to bring fresh videos to the knife community by doing videos that have not been done before. Take apart reviews, sharpening on the cheap, and crazy bottle cuts. Going for 18 with a Spyderco Military!!!

Thanks for watching!

Try a piece of non-skid shelf liner to hold your stone. Works really well for me and is nice for wrapping the stones in too when you put them away.

Thanks for these videos Randy. This is one of the videos that really helped me to learn free hand sharpening. :)

I've seen it done, but haven't had much success myself. My understanding is that it's used by some old timers to maximize the contact with the stone. It's a *great* technique to learn, and I highly recommend it as the most efficient way to freehand sharpen.

I've seen a lot of sharpening videos and this is so far not only my favorite but also the best, the technique is very well explained and that makes it very easy to follow the steps, only one question remains, how do you clean your stones? Thank you so much..

Im planning on learning freehand and Ive got a lot of knives to re-profile. Would you recommend the coarse or extra coarse dmt stone for re-profiling?

wet naps work to clean great, just make sure they are only using alcohol and when done cleaning the wetness will evaporate, only reccomended on the high high grit stones, take that zdp right off

The ways to grind doesn't matter a ton. Though if you do all back and forth you should have a tiny bit less friction because if doing a push cut, the scratches will be going in the direction of the cut. But if you do circles they will be all directions, increasing friction a little. But for a usable sharpness it almost doesn't matter at all, lol. Unless you are shaving with it, doesn't matter basically.

Is that a 6 x 2? And is the Spyderco stone a 8 x 3? I really want to get some stones but they're fairly expensive. So I was thinking of maybe getting a smaller one. Pro's and Con's? Anyone?

I am mostly want to get them for my 3 inch blades. But I also have some large fixed blades. Plus: I am not doing anything excessive with them. So it's mostly touching up, I guess.

How long do these stone or hones last? Years or number of knives.

SoloKnifeReviews how do you get your edges laid back like that? Do you by chance ever reprofile for people? If so I'd gladly pay for your work, Love your videos keep up the good work!
