6 Reasons Outer Wilds Is One Of The Best Adventure Games Ever Made | Outer Wilds Review

Writing an Outer Wilds review isn’t easy. This is a game built on secrets and the thrill of discovery - the very things that make it one of the best adventure games ever made, are the same things that threaten to spoil it. I’ve carefully cut around as much as I can in this Outer Wilds gameplay, so you should be safe to listen to our verdict on a very special game.

For a written Outer Wilds review check out Rock Paper Shotgun: The Site. This is the RPS video gang's attempt at Outer Wild impressions. Again very tricky to do when you are scared of visual spoilers. This is an Outer Wilds PC review - you'll see Xbox prompts in the footage, Mobius recommend using a controller (it makes it easier to work the jetpack thrusters I think) so who are we to rock the boat. We recorded our Outer Wilds test on a GTX 1070 - it's very stable at 1440p. I think it's one of the best adventure games on PC - it's one of the best open world games PC, too, though it isn't much like any other we've played, what with all the space and that.

This Outer Wilds gameplay PC takes you through the basics and hopefully captures the spark of what makes it special. It's a handcrafted universe stuck in a time loop, leading to some incredibly smart puzzles that play out on an epic scale. Through in great gadgets, gorgeous planets, a warm and affectionate tone and this is really special. Honestly, if you like grand adventures in the vein of Zelda you should skip The Outer Wilds review and get straight to the good stuff. The Outer Wilds release date is 30 May - not long to wait.

Of course, you can also get Outer Wilds Xbox - even better, it's part of the Xbox Game Pass. You'd be mad to miss a game this good as part of your subscription, so get right on it. We don't know how well Outer Wilds Xbox One runs, so do let us know in the comments if people should watch out for it. Of course, the disappointing thing is that Outer Wilds Steam is not a thing for the time being - it's another damned Epic Game Store exclusive. Yes, the game will be just as good when it arrives on Steam, but it's a shame to limit it to Epic right now. Personally I'd want to get on it before anyone spoils it, but your mileage may vary.

If you have any questions about Outer Wilds pop them in the comments and I'll do my best to answer them. And if you enjoy this review, why not subscribe to Rock Paper Shotgun for other similar videos throughout the week. Thanks for watching and have fun in space.

In regards to your one gripe of not being able to suicide into the next cycle, a function just like that actually exists. The space man lounging in a hammock will teach you how to meditate if you ask him how he is so relaxed. Meditating lets you immediately skip into the next cycle.

Probably my favorite adventure game to date. The sense of discovery was so surreal and intense. I am putting this game on my "wish I could erase my memories to experience it again" list, ironically.

This video convinced me to play what would become one of my all time favourite titles. Very well written video. Thanks, mate.

To any prospective players: The less of this (or any other) video you watch, the better! Jump on it, it's an amazing experience, better experienced as raw as possible.

9:39 If you talk to the guy on Giant's Deep, you do actually get a reset button where you can "Meditate until the next loop"

What Outer Wilds has that other adventure/survival games don't is the removal of unnecessary frustration. Each twenty minute playthrough has me excited for the next. You never feel defeated but inspired. You find yourself laughing at the mistake you've made and learn from it when you restart. That's Outer Wilds greatest tool - knowledge, and the key to solving the cataclysm. I can recall misplacing a jump and falling into a blackhole; only to be jettisoned to the other side of the galaxy. Finding derelict ruins with secrets to tell, as well as the cause of the cataclysm passing right by me. I chuckled to myself. Sure, I had uncovered something important, but I was floating in the vastness of space while my ship was too far to reach. I gained another piece to the puzzle and continued on my wonderfully strange journey.

Was looking for a new game to play with the missus and came across Outer wilds on the Xbox game pass, playing this through with my gf who's a less experienced gamer recaptured moments only akin to childhood gaming, making discoveries together as we explored really reminded me of what immersion is supposed to be.

Every month or so I think about this game and what it has left me with. It is still so impressive at how they pulled off a world that is living and you're just along for it's ride. The lack of direction may be a turnoff to some but to those of us that see us through will be left with something that pops up in our mind from time to time. Glad to to see a physical copy coming soon. Cheers. 🍻

“Or the time I parked my ship on a landing platform, that turned out to be a gravity canon.” Best thing I’ve heard all year.

All I could think was "Outer wilds not outer worlds" then there's parts where your accent blurred the lines lol. Great review I've been hyped for this one.

Hey, not sure if it’s been mentioned (there’s a lot of comments to read) but, Matt said he wanted an option to reset at your own will. Well, you can. If you talk to Gabbro about dealing with dying all the time, he will teach you meditation, then you can reset your time loop from the pause menu.

Picked this up from the xbox game pass as the reviews were overwhelmingly positive. Man this game is good and so original. I'm going to buy it to support the devs as I really want the brains behind this to make more awesome games. 10/10 and I've only played for a few hours.

10:54 ...that is such a good descriptor, very good writing on your part. Brought a tear to my eye. Wish more game companies thought about this kind of thing.

That's the kind of review that makes me play a game, and then come back after I'm finished to watch it again and see what it got right. See you again soon, I guess.

I LOVE the music and ambiance in this game! The music is a large aspect to this game, in my opinion. Playing this game is the 12 year old me in '92, getting to play what was in his head.

I'm finally getting around to playing this after hearing about it on the Castle Superbeast podcast and man I wish I had heeded their warnings about going into this game blind. I'm still discovering plenty on my own, but there are a couple things from that podcast and another video as well that I would have loved to find out for myself. I feel like I skipped over a bunch of early-game areas and almost unwittingly jumped to more late-game secrets. About 3-4 hours in and I still haven't talked to any of the other astronauts besides the guy on the moon, and I haven't been to any of the other normal planets. Yet I've been to the space station around the storm planet and have been investigating the Twins.
Still, I probably wouldn't have picked it up in the first place were it not for getting the hard sell, so I guess it all comes out in the wash.

One thing I will say as a random side note: this is probably one of the only games where your piloting gets *worse* the longer you play it. Careful and gentle touchdowns give way to casually tossing your ship towards the nearest planet as you realize how much punishment it can take and how little time you have to give a shit about whether or not you can leave the planet anyway.

I think what I especially love about this game is that every part feels connected and considered in design. There are few plot holes or unexplained things. Even things that early in, I thought.. How does that even work?, turn out to be extremely well explained.

Spoiler free small example: I didn't realize that the small crystal in your ship is a gravity crystal that keeps you upright all the time. That's so simple and cool but those details are so well thought out! I love that the world feels entirely consistent and internally logical.

The one question I don't that gets answered (correct me if I missed something) is why you and Gabbro are activated with the statues in the first place.

The only thing standing out in comparison to the narrative masterpiece that is outer wilds is the quality of this review. Congrats.
