10+ Tips to know before playing Outer Wilds(Spoiler free!)

I figure since the launch of the game on steam comes soon. And outer wilds is a very much not hand holdy game. In fact they chuck you in the deep end. Oh, but its not just the deep end of a pool. Its the deep end of an entire solar system. So I figure the new Venturers could come visit Gossan and get a few pointers! Hopefully this makes your experience in the game a bit easier than some. Heck. Sleeping wasnt even implemented when I played lol.

For match velocity the A or X depends what kind of controller youre using. Xbox is A and Playstation is X. I meant to add a little text bubble but forgot...so here ya go lol.

One enormous tip that I would give to people is: trust the game. When you don’t understand a certain mystery, don’t look it up online, just keep exploring other areas, even go to another planet if you have to. The Outer Wilds ALWAYS has answers to your questions, sometimes they are just in a completely different planet. I spoiled several mysteries for myself because I couldn’t figure it out on my own only to find that if I explored another planet first it was easily explained.

The one thing on this list that I only discovered halfway through the game is that you can use the scout as a light. So many times I was annoyed at how dark an area is and how inadequate the torch feels.

The first time you go through the trajectory of the sun is a wild feeling, you press auto pilot, not expecting the freaking SUN to block your path. So you eventually see a bright light in your screen and look up, but it's already too late

I finished the game and only in this video I recently found out about altimeter at the side of the ship during landing mode, the eject button and eating marshmello gives you health... derp

Saving doesn't enable till like half an hour after you take off (critical lore reasons, there is no other way), so reserve 1-2 hours for first session.

Tip 10.5: the scout launcher has a secret Photo mode that can be utilized by pressing left or right without launching the scout. This allows you to quickly take photos (and see ghost matter zones) without having to recall the scout each time you need a new camera position.

I really wish I had the love for this game that I’ve witnessed from other players. I feel like if I’m not wandering around to try and find my destination in 20 minutes, I’m repairing my ship or getting shot out into space.

another tip you might find useful while floating in space is that when launching the scout, outside of a gravity field, it will push you 4m/s in the opposite direction from the recoil. good for when you need to try and save fuel in dire situations 😅

Just a good tip in general is to use the HECK out of the scout: It gives you a boost in the opposite direction when airborne; It gives off light, You can check a structures stability and it shows you exactly WHERE ghost matter is located. (The latter I hadn't figured until it was way too late because I had thought ghost matter is always indicated by the little glas diamonds 🤦🏻‍♂️😭) Of course many times you are required to use it to work out story bits too. The scout quickly became my best friend ingame and I didn't even know its full potential. Remember its your friend and it will always come back!

1:40 It sounds so obvious when you put it like that, but that was the difference for me between landing on the moon and my first attempt, which involved bouncing so hard on it I broke every part of the ship and desperately attempting repairs while hurtling at max speed straight into the sun.

See I understand people not knowing a few of those things, BUT HOW DO YOU NOT NOTICE THE GLOWING COMPUTER AT THE BACK OF YOUR SHIP IT'S SUCH A TINY SHIP

So useful! Some of these things I learned the hard way 😂 well done video! The scariest thing for me is when I get lost in space without my ship...like if I get sucked up in a cyclone in giants deep, next thing u know I’m floating in space. Only once I was able to actually make my way back to the ship by simply not panicking or giving up. Love this game, peaceful and horrifying at the same damn time.

I watched this when I first played to see if there were anything that I was missing. Never really thought the game would catch my eye like it did. I started watching your videos like a week ago jus because the game is so small yet so vast & your videos do such a good job of capturing that. Simple put, You are “The Outer Wilds” of Lore on YouTube Mr. Lore Explorer.

My rules of thumb about when to slow down when approaching a planet :
I make my speed about 1/10 of my distance. when I'm between 2000 and 7000 m from the planet.
If I'm further away, I need to brake earlier than 1/10 of the distance (at 10km, 1000m/s is too fast), but at less than 2000m and 200m/s, I can just eyeball it and stop looking at the numbers.
