Poltava was the greatest Swedish defeat ever 6000-8000 dead and 16 000 captured. About 25 000 soldiers were alive before the battle but the invasion force was maybe
60 000 strong and a relief army about 10 000 strong was also lost. In one days fighting 8000 dead is horrendous. But from a force of maybe 70 000 less then 1000 returned home! Still one year after Poltava the Swedish army completely destroyed a numerical superior danish force a the battle of Helsingborg. Poltava was the beginning of the end of the empire and during the great northern war an estimated 200 000 Swedish soldiers died mostly from disease and famine this from a population of less then 3 million.

This defeat of Swedes under Poltava turned into a tragedy of Russian occupation for many people of Europe from Caucasus to Balticum. The devastating consequences of this Swedes' defeat for these people are being perceived until now.
