After seeing the adaption of "The Ritual" I've been on an Adam Nevill binge. Reading this you know Adam Nevill has had a problem neighbour or two.

You know, I watch a lot of the Book tubers, but ol Ollie is the only one I would want to get a beer with.

Love all of his books - I’ve re-read all of them, he’s my favourite author.

I love folk horror with a close knit family unit. I just read the Auctioneer by Joan Samson and loved it. This sounds like a great follow up.

Love Nevill, love this book. I do deduct a *little* for the very obvious tension-ratcheting setup of "Welcome to Darkest Fuckallshire, here's a kid and a cute dog" (and I'm with Laird Barron in thinking the trope of - uh, SPOILER - introducing a pet that very clearly won't make it to the end is a little problematic, for all that it's time-tested), but it's a book that WORKS and delivers its punches utterly mercilessly. And I dig the unsettling payoff at the end.

THE REDDENING is also very, very good, though I think less successful in the "getting you to immediately care about the characters" department, but it works just as well in that once the stakes are clear, the hook is all the way in. It's another great folk horror, but with a hint of the cosmic, and I praise Nevill for showing you don't need tentacles to pull that off, just deep time and an uncomfortable look at the fossil record.

Nevill's a fantastic and flexible prose stylist, which comes off especially well in his short work (some of the best in the genre - don't miss his collections). He's especially good at pastiche; his tributes to M.R. James and Aickman are pitch-perfect while being more than just imitation.

He is also, as far as I can tell, a really nice guy, and his newsletter is worth subscribing to.

Adam Nevill is near the top of my favorite horror authors. This book gave me so much anxiety when I read it. I also really loved Last Days and No One Gets Out Alive. Glad you enjoyed it!

Adam Nevill is one of my favorite authors and a good friend of mine. His newest book The Vessel is great as well. I just wish they were longer!! 😢

This is exactly the kind of book (subject, style, characterization) I've been looking for! Thank you so much for sharing!! Also, I just looked up folk horror because I'm a horror n00b! Very cool - thanks again!

The great thing about this book was that it made my neighbors seem not so bad after all.

I did really appreciate, finally, reading a "we are moving to the country to get away from the big bad city" horror novel from the perspective of a family with real world problems.

Glad you enjoyed it! I was going to read after my next one. The Ritual and The last days are my favourites. I also have the vessel by him which I need to read.

This is fascinating Olly, the first novel of his I read was No One gets Out Alive. The main character moves from Stoke ( Where I live) to Birmingham and it all goes to hell from there. I didn't like it at first but boy did it creep up on me, to places I was shocked by, many of them had serious folk horror themes. I'm pretty sure that Cunning Folk is self published whereas his other work is more trad. published. Not sure why that is. That movie, The Ritual even though not faithful was fucking excellent.

This was one of my favorite reads of last year. It was so creepy, unsettling, and like you said he made these people feel so real. That ending!😮

I love his work. I recommend The Ritual of course, but also No One Gets Out Alive, The Reddening, and Banquet For The Damned

I've read some Adam Nevill's but not this one yet... One of the things I love so much about his books is how his characters are always struggling financially and how true this struggle feels. You should read The Ritual, the first half is just perfect horror and poetry !
Thank you for your videos and all your recomandations !
