That's one of the reasons why I love Demon Slayer, in all of it's silliness and fantasy, it just feels realistic. They're fighting off a powerful demon with over a 1000 years old, even though they're martial artists and swordsmen that have surpassed the limits of what human can do they're still human. Like this it really gives weight to Muzan's true power and how he was capable of remaining alive for so many years.

Plus, let's not forget that whoever escaped the fight but awakened the mark died early because they state whoever awoke the mark cannot live past 25.
