Firing Diess was the biggest mistake VW did!

The legacy auto companies have collectively buried their heads in the sands thinking that EV development will be slow, like it has been in the past 20 years. And they had their reality check last year in the Shanghai Auto Show.

As I understand it the final nail in the coffin that got Deiss sacked was when he wanted to reduce the worldwide budget for VW advertising by 9 billion and put the money on R and D, specifically EV, s. The Porsche-Piech family are still the majority shareholders and voted him out. Deiss was an engineer and the accountants didn’t like an engineer in charge. Mary Barra is an accountant (MBA), Farly from Ford is an accountant (MBA), Toyoda from Toyota was a MBA but the new guy Sato is an engineer but is surrounded by MBA, s., even the CEO of Geely is guess what? An MBA. BYD chairman is …..a chemist specialising in metals. Anyone see a pattern here?

Any auto company that eliminates the volume knob is on the wrong path.

In Germany VW tells a different story ;-) They say, their EV sales are going down because the people don't want EVs any more (they don't mention that the 6000, - EV bonus for the buyers has been canceled in Germany with about 3 days notice starting from January 1. 2024).

And Tesla for example is still selling their Teslas, even in Germany in big numbers.

Germany is never well-known for its software engineering. I think it has been more or less related to their slow digitalization: the whole society dislikes anything digital (they may prefer "mechanical"). From digital payment, to internet infrastructure, etc.

The German auto unions have shot themselves in the foot. Trying to save jobs by retaining production of ICE vehicles condemns VW to a bit part role in the world vehicle market. Factories will close as VW loses market share and tens of thousands of union jobs will be lost. I am reminded of the UK coal industry, destroyed almost single-handedly by the leader of the National Union of Mineworkers (Arthur Scargill). Rather than accept that coal was very polluting and on its way out and negotiate an extended drawdown with good worker compensation, he chose to organise strikes and combat the closures. In short order he permanently destroyed demand for UK coal (it was even cheaper to import it all the way from Australia). There are currently only two large coal mines in the UK - down from over thirty. It is believed by many that Scargill was working on instruction from the Soviet Union. I don't think German Unions are working for anyone but their workers, but they are failing them in that they do not see the real world as it is but rather than through the rose tinted spectacles of permanent production of ICE vehicles. In short, blinkered Luddites.

I have a ID.4 and I don't like or hate the haptic buttons. The travel assist is by far the best I have used. The software is not great but you get used to it. Like everything there are always better ways to do it. The Nav works but it is ugly. I have a 2022 Pro S RWD and in 2 years I have put on 81k miles.

I recently went from a 2020 Golf 8, the worst car I ever owned. The car was in the workshop 13 times in 3 years for software issues. From annoying to dangerous application of the brakes on the autobahn. VW customer service was shocking, they didn't care at all. So we now drive an EQA250 EV and love it. VW are losing the plot!

The software only works if the rest of the infrastructure is in place and fit for purpose (sensors, chips etc.) VW "building to a price-point" has often compromised that.

The touch buttons on the steering wheel is a disaster. For some reason Audi has also used touch buttons on their new Q6 etron. It makes the car feel cheep and there is no way the reduced cost of the parts is a good enough excuse to do this. The steering wheel of my 2017 e-golf feels a lot more exclusive, and the buttons works perfectly.

Not to mention how stale the ID.4 is contributing to those poor sales. It’s not a competitive car.

It seems the 'legacy' automakers are making a bit of a mess of evs. It seems there is a lot more to making these things than was originally apparent.

Volkswagen are generations behind. 9 of my friends that are Volkswagen owners have sold their car and bought Ev. And swore never to buy VW again

Europe hasn't banned Chinese cars it's just put a high import duty on ones made in China, that's why BYD are building factories to make them in Uzbekistan, Hungary and Turkie. To get around US tariffs they're going to build factories in Brasil, Mexico and Canada.

Neighbour has a leased ID3 - absolutely hates it. Loads of software and hardware issues, multiple times off road in 3 years, poor build quality, just a mess. He’s now bought a used Nissan Leaf and loves it. The ID3 is just running down the lease now on his drive.

We’ve only driven our leased 2023 ID4 about 3500 miles to date. I guess I’m supposed to be worried about all of these software problems, and haptic controls, and be all hating how it all works; but so far it’s great. I purposely tried to recreate the haptic adaptive cruise control issue, so far I am unable to understand how it happens? The adaptive cruise set and resume are not haptics; they both must be physically pushed. That said, out of caution I have adopted a policy of simply turning off the whole system (it’s just a touch of a one button and it informs you that it is off or on) completely when in closes quarters.
I was at a parking area at the marina/harbor today in my city of 90, 000. There were four ID4’s within eye shot of where I parked ours, also on Iconic 5, two Bolts and one Model Y and several plug in hybrids from various brands. To be sure there is not one of those models or any other new cars there that doesn’t have some issues.
