VW software team are one of the worst software team I've seen in our modern era. ID.3 infotainment UI looks like Windows 95 from back then. They looks so outdated and Slow.

VW software team should be ashamed

VW will also have access to the XPeng software team.

I am guessing VW IT in Germany is heavily staffed with Indian engineers. Indian engineers are excellent academia programmers. Unfortunately the same can't be said for the real-life problem solving - see Boeing's painful realization of their subcontracting avionic software to Indian companies - disaster is not just a pun.

Two months ago my Taycan had an over the air update, not in Porsche garage, but at my home. That went without any problems. Apparently there is still hope.

Not really surprised. My last 2 VW have had several software issues that took an age to rectify. Unfortunately I feel VW products are no longer as good as they used to be 20 years ago.

I saw this coming for years, my ex was a team lead at Cariad. Nonstop infighting and sabotage between separate teams developing their own approaches to solving the same problem, only to be forced to take their separate incompatible codebases and attempt to merge them together. I know for a fact my ex made a presentation to Diess with cherry-picked machine learning results showing it was improving and working as intended. When in reality it was just a lucky outlier result from an old test run...

2000 engineers for a car control & infotainment system? 200 would be too many.

i have a friend who is a software lead at another big german automaker… he said he was shocked how bad the level of coding/software engineering was.. most people would be shocked dead to know where in the world the software of their expensive “german” car is being written…

it’s not surprising to me but for VW to basically fire the WHOLE division, and basically start afresh, means the state of german software engineering is in DIRE straits 😮

Surprised you didn’t mention Porsches announcement yesterday that they would be using Google built in / android automotive

Good content, solid analysis. Worked with VW in the past and it’s such a wonderful team of professionals that it’s painful to see how it’s going at the moment. Hopefully they can pivot soon

Lol. Carid was recruiting incredibly hard at CES last year. Big booth in the hall, all the cars, concept vw. You could apply right there and get an interview.

Having worked in software I can guess that the German team gave an estimate for the next project to take 24 months. They had the China team bid the project. The team in China just went ahead and banged out a prototype that was 80% complete in two weeks not realizing this was just a request for a schedule.

We need Chinese executives not Software developers

The title says it all, really. And yup, Sam called it before. Great job! But I do hope the VW software engineers get good jobs. It takes A LOT of work to really be a good software developer. * However, we don't need more software. We need more people to get a basic understanding.

Actually it was deleayd since Audi and Porsche wanted the OLS 1.2 System since they wanted a "Old School" look and own look for their infotainment. So all resource where moved towards the old software version instead creating the 2.0 version. So its Porsche and Audis fault actually.
