Making vehicles that fly through the air is one of the human race’s greatest achievements. To someone born two hundred years ago, the idea would seem impossible. Even today, building aircraft is such a specialist activity that it takes millions of dollars, and the expertise of highly-qualified professionals to achieve it. For those reasons, you’d probably imagine that amateurs would stay away from aircraft building, but every plane you’re about to see in this video is homemade!

*2:16 246 knots
*3:14 weighing in at around 1,700 pounds = 771 kg

This was a total waste of time except for learning about the fellow who built a plane out of scrap stuff he collected. He must hold the world's record for the heaviest homebuilt plane at "1, 700 tons" as stated at 3:17. MOST IMPRESSIVE.

Couple of other things. Wallis' autogiros are not all named Little Nellie, that was a one off built for the movies. Next, the Sling 4 is a design from the Sling Aircraft Factory of South Africa, and it's a kit. So, if the kids built it, they didn't build it from scratch, but from a kit.

As a kid I was lucky enough to see a Little Nelly, pilot unknown, whizzing about just to the west of Norwich, Norfolk. Fascinating aircraft.

3rd plane "is certainly bulky, it weighs over 1700 Tons"

did I hear that right ..@ 3:14 - 3:16 the narrator said the plane weighs over 1700 tons... for a home built plane?? A 747 weighs 250 tons... so basically this guys home made plane weighs 6 times more than a 747....

in case you missed it. saying the guy that built the auto gyro only built 30 and kept them all is wrong. they are widely available as gyrocopters and have been for many years.

1700 tons aye? Think McFly. An A380 weighs less than 400 tons. With a 6 foot prop it probably weighs 1700 pounds. The enormous mass of 1700 tons is the weight of 40 eighteen wheelers with 53' trailers that are fully loaded...not even close

The knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour, so saying knots per hour is like saying nautical miles per hour per hour. So Symmetry can do 246 knots per hour (sic) *in the air.* But where else is it going to travel that fast? "...the lack of drag makes taking off a lengthy process" What? Are you kidding?

Homemade aircraft weighs 1, 700 tons? You realize that's 3.4 million pounds, right? The Antonov A-225 is said to weigh 628, 000 lbs and have a cargo capacity of 253.8 tonnes (559, 000 lb) and uses 6 engines. And and this little home built 3.4 million lb plane flies with a Toyota motor and a 6 foot propeller? Amazing engineering, to be sure.

I don't know who's writing your scripts but you should probably have someone with aeronautical experience review them first.

3:15 SEVENTEEN HUNDRED TONS?! THAT'S 3, 400, 000 POUNDS! Is it made from lead padded neutron star panels?!

I think the "wedding plane" looks life threatening, luckily (for the pilot and inventor) it did not take off from the ground.

Made it to 1:35, no experimental aircraft, besides a few half second clips.

Interesting video, I remember watching a tv talk show once and a husband and wife team built a home made jet with engine and all. They not only had their jet on stage but the wife carried the home made jet engine on stage in her hands
If I could only remember who’s talk show that was

“Knots per hour”? That’s an acceleration, not a speed! Knots is nautical miles per hour. Did you sleep through physics class?

None of these pictures have anything to do with what he's talking about. This channel sucks

The autogyro was invented by Spanish engineer Juan de la Cierva in an attempt to create an aircraft that could fly safely at low speeds. He first flew one on 9 January 1923

The first one was in the Road Warrior also. Great movie!

knots includes "per hour" so saying it is redundant.
