This song perfectly encapsulates the pain of seeing somebody you care about (a friend, a romantic partner, a family member, etc.) struggle with mental illness particularly things like addiction or depression. The pain of wanting to see that person get better, to take away their pain, but not being able to. Especially if you yourself also struggle with those same issues and are steadily improving or at least trying to improve and the other person doesn't seem to make as much of an effort, whether because they don't want to or circumstances won't allow them to. Or a bit of both. It gets even worse if that other person pushes you away or shuts down at any attempts you make to help them get better. Of course, it's just as painful actually being that "bird on the wire". You see those around you making progress or at least trying to, and you wonder what's wrong with you, why can't you do the same? Others may make attempts to help but their attempts don't help or maybe even make it worse. The road to hell is paved with good intentions. It hurts, both being that person that can't be saved and being the one trying to save but can't save.

I'm someone who ends up accidentally doing this to people a lot and the meaning seems simple to me. It's nothing about abandonment really, it's about adventure and stagnation. The first bird always seeks fun and new experiences and to spend time like life is worth living. The second bird stays and makes excuses to not leave his comfort zone, ending up being left alone without ever getting to experience new things

This song hits in our true lives from both me and my non blood related brother but brother from times of darkness and sorrow, being unwary of things going through bad habits to sought fun, the reason why we are stuck on those wires, as time gets older I just wanna break free from this bad habits I tried to stop him but he's scared due to deep depression, I couldn't heal it and ended up on a here am I breathing fine, trying to fit in those people with pure love but no trust.

reminds me of my two cats, brother and sister, they were both really old and the wire is their life, the brother (Zorro) died first which is when the bird leaves the wire. His sister Fury was so confused when she couldnt find him anymore..
