"I've worked in bananas, i've worked in peaches, i've worked in grapes..."
Said by the one who works in Apples

Nassim Nicholas Taleb didn’t invent skin in the game, he just wrote an excellent book about what it means to be responsible for our own advice to others.

Little did he know that decades later I would learn his wisdom on his device while sitting on a toilet. This man is responsible for 10000% increase in dead legs 😵

The same can also be said for many teachers or professors that have little to no career experience in the field they teach. They maybe good at teaching from a textbook but they have no real world knowledge.

I own a car, because I own the car I’m more likely to take better care of it than if I didn’t own it. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

I never really appreciated cucumbers until I grew cucumbers from seeds. I never cared to buy them at the supermarket, but now I have a particularly grounded sense. That’s what he’s getting at.

Taleb's idea of skin in the game isn't about getting better on an individual level, it's about filtering out what doesn't work at a systemic level.

As a businessman I can testify, this is the greatest 2 minute clip I've every seen.

He’s the only guy who can insult your career and you applaud him for it.

The expression "skin in the game" predates both Steve Jobs and Nassim Taleb

Talebs was very clear about writing a book that would have been relevant in the past, and that his core ideas were not necessarily new, only that they (unfortunately) needed to be repeated for our current time.

Hammurabi did it centuries back! Both of them are good practitioners

The point steve is making different from what Taleb made. Taleb call out people that transfer fragility to others. These people like bankers do that on purpose. They have no desire to learn from their mistakes. They don't affect them.

I worked for a decade believing about ownership of a product and taking complete responsibility for the product. It is true that you get to learn a lot, but on the flipside you will not be progressing much in your career. I lost opportunities to learn newer technologies and moving up in my career progress with lots of remarks from many of my managers that I am irreplaceable for the product development and they would instead offer me lots of bonuses and increments to keep me still with the product without letting me move on to more challenging projects.
In hindsight, I now realised that no matter how much you might believe that you own the project and it's 'your baby' - you will not be able to influence the management to come up with a better product or re-engineer the project to improve the impact on business. It is after all a product owned by the company. With this in mind, having a consultant mindset helps everyone to keep the expectations more realistic. If you want to truely learn something - do it in your own free time and then implement these learnings (if the business permits) into the current project. This will help you learn stuff and it will also keep you in the market.

This is gospel truth. Its easy to be a critic. Its hard to create. Scar tissue is proof you took a hit and kept moving. I had no idea how hard being an entrepreneur was...until I became one. And now I know what he's talking about.
