Thank you for these suggestions! The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorites, which makes me excited to read some of the others you feature here.

The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favourite books too. Setterfield's writing is just fantastic. Once Upon a River is amazing as well

A great list! Thirteenth Tale just felt like a love letter to Gothic literature, but looking back I can really see the Wuthering Heights inspiration.

What a great list. I really must read The Thirteenth Tale! I don't know why I keep not getting to it. I loved Once Upon A River. I was interested you picked the Roy. There have been a number of times when reading novels by authors from the Indian subcontinent who write in English that I feel a Victorian novel vibe. More in the scope and style than a reference to a specific work though.

You know I love the brontes so always look for books connected or inspired by them. Started your book yesterday and love it already 😊

Jane Eyre was difficult for me because it seemed very spiritual. Rather than turning off modern readers, that facet of her character makes her even more interesting. That was a surprise to me.

thank you for these! Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid and Stir Fry by Emma Donoghue both have threads of Villette in them (especially the first one)

I have heard of Jane Steele, which is apparently a retelling of Jane Eyre in modern times, but with Jane as a serial killer. I am looking forward to reading your book soon. Jane Eyre is my favorite book of all time.

This is lovely! I definitely would want to read Red Room and put Frannie Langton on hold. An Atlas of Impossible Longing also seems very great!

Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid, a retelling / inspired by Villette is immaculate!

I wonder if you have heard of the novel Dark Quartet by Lynne Reid Banks. It's a sort of fictionalised biography of the lives of Charlotte, Emily, Anne, and Branwell.

The Path of Thorns by A. G. Slatter, though that's another Jane Eyre-ish one
