Eastern European here. It's a custom in general, you don't go with nothing to offer to the family you're invited at for dinner, party or whatever. But i thought that's a universal rule!

I’m on the same boat but I live in Russia now. 9 months ago I moved to a Siberian village to live with my girlfriend because she’s from Russia lives in Russia and so I stayed for her since getting her to the US is impossible now. I’ve fallen in love with this place I intend to stay.
