So you have installed you operating system on VMware workstation and you have now run out of hard disk space? well don't worry, you can still extend the hard disk without losing data.

As someone who has started playing with VM's I find this very useful if I should need it. Thanks for the video

My 30.00 GB unallocated space does not give me the option to expand when I right-click on it. Not sure why :-(

Thank you for the information. This can really help me increase size in my Virtual Machine.

There is also a way to reduce the size if you have free space in the virtual disk image. e.g. if you have a 60GB virtual disk and you have 30GB free space, you can resize and clone it to a new 40GB virtual disk (e.g. Acronis True Image for Windows VMs, or Diskpart & Clonezilla for the Ubuntu linux VM). I have done this for all my virtual machines (including my Ubuntu linux vm).

example:
1. Create a 2nd virtual disk with 40GB size.
2. boot with Acronis True Image bootable iso and clone from the 60GB (with 30GB free space) to the new 40GB virtual disk.
3. After the completion of the operation, shutdown the virtual machine.
4. Edit the virtual machine and remove both the virtual disk. Click OK.
5. Re-enter the edit virtual machine and create a virtual disk, but use the 40GB image from before (that has the clone). Click OK.
6. You are done.

Of course you can resize your current image to a smaller size and just don't use the unallocated virtual disk space.

Hi, have been watching your videos every now and then and have learned a few things here and there, so for that, thank you for the time you put into the making of these. Since this video is about VMWare, I just wanted to ask. Is it possible and if so how to reduce the size of a VMWare virtual disk. I am playing around with a couple of VMs for which I have created a couple of virtual disks that are much bigger than required and i would like to shrink them down to around 20-25 Gbs in size, if it is feasible to do so. If i can get them down to this capacity i will still have at least 5Gb free space which is fine for the particular VMs. Thanks.

Always use VM VirtualBox in Linux and there is a box to dynamically allocated the virtual disk during setup to let VM automatically resize the virtual disk. Is there the same option in VMware?

@Britec09 Did You know that another new version of Windows is soon to be rolled out/released/applied. I mean they barely have fixed a long list of bugs in version 2004 (still some known issues not fixed) and now they will push out a new version again. **sigh** It is called *20H2* as they will change their way of naming versions moving forward. 20 is the year of course and H2 means second half of the year. Not sure but it seems it will be sometimes in October, possibly November. What will they screw up this time? It will also probably come with the hassle of resetting all privacy options, for the gazzillionth time. That would not surprise me at all. Among other things the start menu and alot of the icons will look different. Start menue will more follow Your theme. As well as the taskbar will be different for different setups depending on Your account.

The taskbar thing will only apply to totally new fresh Windows installs as you setup a new account, or when you reinstall windows 10. Gamer setups will have the XBox icon in there, more office setups will have a more office taskbar etc. I'm not sure if this is a push towards making it impossible to bypass setting up a Microsoft account with a new install and one must link to a Microsoft account to determine what setup one will get? I mean now it is still possible to just be offline while installing a fresh windows 10 and have no Microsoft account at all but a local one. If a fresh install, or a reinstall, require your account to determine setup variation, maybe that will not be possible anymore? Microsoft will of course say it's for our sakes to make Windows more personalized and convenient, while in fact it might be to force us into their eco system with a Microsoft account. This is just a thought and me speculating of course.

You have a great weekend too btw !!! :)

For the life of me, I cannot understand why VMware thinks it's necessary (or a good idea) to copy the entire disk file simply to expand it. It's absolutely insane that they think it's reasonable to thrash the disk like that (copying a huge file from/to the same drive), causing completely unnecessary wear. Writing a new file is understandable when you're compacting/shrinking a disk, but not when expanding it.

I love how noone on this planet dares to talk about the "Advanced" option, what does it do can someone explain it? there is literally no explanation even in documents themselves, is it just for trolling?
