How to Travel the World on a Budget

Tips for traveling the world CHEAP! I've traveled to every country by 21 years old and I'm completely self funded. I started working at my family's travel agency when I was 15 and I've been able to learn a lot about travel hacking and how to travel on a budget.

Thinking about how to afford to travel can be overwhelming if you think about it as one big price tag. Its helpful to break it up- Flights, Accommodation, Food, etc. Destination also matters a lot when you’re on a budget, so if you’re on a tight budget make sure to travel to the cheapest destinations in the world which are just as amazing as anywhere else including South East Asia, Central America and similar.

When you fly, travel during off seasons when there won’t be as many tourists and also travel during holidays- flying on thanksgiving, New Years or Christmas will save you so much money!

On the topic of credit cards: There are so many travel rewards programs! One of the best things you can do right now to start traveling the world is to never use your debit card again. Every time you use your credit card, you could be collecting points and miles that fund your next vacation. I can’t remember the last time I used real money to purchase a long haul flight which as you guys probably know is usually the most expensive part of a trip. Basically you can use airline miles for plane tickets and hotel points for free hotel stays. This is the beginning of a very long, in depth conversation that I’m really excited to tell you more about because its genuinely changed my life but I’m going to save that for another time so make sure to subscribe to see more of that.

Another great tip for saving money while traveling, especially if you are not in a rush is to avoid flights as much as possible. Bus tickets and local train passes can get you across countries for a fraction of the cost and it’s a great way to see as much of the country as possible out the window.

Overall, be aware of how you spend money in your daily life. Skip the lattes and the new clothes because these costs really start to add up. I don’t buy material possessions very often! If I do, they’re typically very small so I save money and use it on experiences instead.

I hope this information was helpful! There will be more videos about budget travel in the future!

Can you please make a video on credit cars and points for miles on aeroplanes. And also which websites you use to get the best priced accommodation and flights?

I also rather spend my money on experiences rather than posessions, I believe this is the key to a better and happier life 🌞🙌🏼

Great tips, Lexie! I started traveling as a teenager by saving all my money and not spending on things that my friends were buying like clothes, going out, etc. I've since been to 62 countries. 😎 My top money-saving travel tip is to slow travel and live like a local in each place you go instead of spending like you're on holiday. Congrats again on traveling to every country in the world!

“I rarely spend my money on things that aren’t travel” simple but amazing! I agree that experiences are so much more important to me than materialistic items

Excluding the flights, I managed to live in Mexico (riviera Maya and Mexico city) for 3 weeks with ~30€ per day

Definitely agree with carry on only!!! We found traveling as a couple a bit more challenging to budget, especially if we wanted a private room (most cheap hostels dorms were 10 or more people).

Hey Lexie! Since you‘ve been to every country, could you maybe make a video about in which countries you could communicate in English and in which you needed to help yourself differently? Especially for Asian or African countries? 💕

Quality tips. I would also include that getting data for one's phone is significantly less expensive in other countries. Where I'll spend at least $50/month in USA, my data packages have been $12/month in Hong Kong, $15/month in Mexico, and about $13/month in Colombia, list as a few examples.

Great tips... We are not backpackers (my dad used to be one) but we save a lot by planning in advance. In our last trip, I was the one who planned our itinerary adn searched cheap but good eating places and accommodation. The ratings from website helped me a lot.
