It teaches you there can be dire consequences to your actions. Of course there’s a line of proper punishment and abuse.

Hmm I think punishment is reserved for situations like "I know you knew exactly what to do and you chose to do something wrong or hurtful anyway". If they haven't had ample time to learn the right behavior, then obviously punishment does not fit, but punishment has its place for straight up disobedience (when they do know better) vs. just behaving wrongly.
