"Baptism is nothing else than the Word of God in the water, commanded by His institution, or, as Paul says, a washing in the Word; as also Augustine says: Let the Word come to the element, and it becomes a Sacrament." - The Smalcald Articles / Part III / Article V: Of Baptism

I'm loving these short-form videos. They're good for reference and also just provide good content in between your releases for longer form videos.

Keep it up Dr Cooper!

I think anyone who comes to Scripture with a truly open heart and mind, not wanting to know anything more than the truth of God's Word, who takes the proper time to study, will come to understand that baptism is part of the saving gospel of Jesus Christ. I did.

Well put. This definitely seems to me to be the most logical conclusion and you did it great service in presentation.

I love that he gives the obvious answer "Baptism Does Save You" because that is what the bible says.

It is a fools errand to argue that Baptism does not save you, becuase the Bible says that it does, and God can not lie.

2 Corinthians 2:14 "But thanks be to God, who in Christ always leads us in triumphal procession, and through us spreads the fragrance of the knowledge of him everywhere."🙏
Let God’s Peace and Grace be with you (To The Reader). Praise God always. Amen🙏🙌

Dr. Cooper, your videos are being very helpful for me to understand the Lutheran doctrines. This video helps me to understand a little more about the Lutheran position on baptism and its relation with regeneration. But I still not understand some points. For example, I understand the continental reformed tradition or westminster tradition about the infant Baptism... but for me is difficult to understand the Lutheran position... Do you still believe that is necessary for the infant to profess faith in Christ later so this baptismal regeneration being effective? Thanks so much for your videos. God gave you the capacity to explain things clearly, and this video was very clear, but for me, as a person that don't make part of the Lutheran tradition, I prefer to ask, before misunderstanding, and take my own conclusions, that maybe do not reflect Lutheran beliefs. God bless you!

Baptism saves because Jesus saves. Regeneration is according to God’s decree which can happen before, at, or even after baptism.

Scripture and the one holy Catholic and Apostolic Church for the first 1, 000 years preserved the apostolic teaching of baptism as a washing away of sin. Adults and children were baptized. Read the Ante-Nicene Fathers. They lived it. It’s new and innovative to say anything different. But additionally, Sola Fide, according to the late RC Sproul, contradicts baptismal regeneration.

I get your points, but why isn’t washing a way of talking about the Spirit’s work proper? It seems like baptism is read into these texts. The regeneration is the washing it seems to me. And, not to be too hyper semantic…the text in Peter doesn’t say “baptism saves you…”
The text says more than that and it needs to be interpreted. We should never say “baptism saves you” as a shorthand of quoting Peter.

"not the removal of dirt from the flesh" What does this portion of the verse indicate?

Well, we know that regeneration or salvation can occur before water baptism as evident in Acts 11:44-48! From this text we can also determine that if one is not yet water baptized but has true saving faith in Christ and has the indwelling Holy Spirit, that if one is not water baptized it does not always = damned or unsaved! God is sovereign and can do anything in any order He chooses. However, willingly not being water baptized flies in the face of Holy Scripture and is in direct opposition to a command given by Christ Jesus Himself! Not wanting to openly declare one's faith in Christ in baptism is actually tantamount to denying Him before men, and we all know what our Lord as said regarding that! 🔥

I don't have anything constructive to add... So this comment is really only here to help with the YouTube algorithm.
Just kidding, another great video!

“The like figure whereunto even baptism doth also now save us (not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God, ) by the resurrection of Jesus Christ:”
‭‭1 Peter‬ ‭3‬:‭21‬

Jordan, I have seen you reference this verse in several videos but I have NEVER seen you address what Peter says in the parentheses here. It's not the washing of the flesh but the good conscience that saves you. We are transformed by the renewing of our mind (Romans 12:2) and have the mind of Christ when we are regenerate (1 Cor 2:16, Philippians 2:5).

So the question is, what actually transforms and renews your mind and conscience. It seems to me that it would be belief, or faith. The gospels do, in fact, make a point to contrast John's baptism of water to Christ's baptism of the Holy Ghost (Matt 3:11, Mark 1:8, Luke 3:16, John 1:33). Putting away the filth of the FLESH is obviously something that water would do, but changing the MIND is something that the Spirit would do. I don't see anywhere in Peter where that is contingent on physically coming into contact with actual water and in fact he seems to pre-empt this in his wording.

Luke 12:50 Jesus refers to his impending death and resurrection as baptism. No water. Hence Paul in romans 6 is symbolically describing our unity with christ’s death and resurrection through baptism the same way Jesus himself metaphorically spoke of it.

Did the water save Noah or the ark (which could be a Christ like figure) u must be in Jesus to be saved.
