Hey, it's Mayim, and I love Marie Kondo and her book 'The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.' It actually was life-changing for me, and I want you to feel like you can clean up your living space, too. Here are some tips that I think make cleaning and organizing a little easier.

When you said you find pleasure in throwing things away I said "YES!" out loud! My mom is a total emotional saver, verging on a hoarder. She literally cannot throw anything away. As a result, my sister and I are total minimalists who are obsessed with de-cluttering. I have tried to help her pare down, but it just ends in fights. I'm going to make her watch this!!!!

100% on point. It's taking me years but that book really has changed my life. Sometimes I'd stop for months to deal with the emotions sorting my possessions brought up. Every time I tidy and purge I feel lighter and life just gets easier. I know where everything is in my closets now and clearing spaces to reset them at the end of the day is pure MAGIC. I've even started emptying my backpack and repacking it every night, something I thought was totally nuts when I read the book.

I concur. It deeply affects my mood when things are in disarray. Can’t tell you how many people project negativity on me by labeling it OCD. An orderly environment, a place for everything and everything in its place make for a happier and more productive me. I had one very bad move that nearly killed me a decade ago and cured me of accumulating extra stuff. Living in a house currently that was built in 1929 further helps me stay committed to neat and tidy. Modern homes are bigger = more places to ‘store’ stuff. It’s comforting to know that I am not alone in thriving in a space that is free of clutter.

I dig this. Over the last few years I have been decluttering and re decluttering and redecluttering. It’s not that I get more and more stuff, it’s that each time I go through I get better at it. This video was the motivation I needed to get through my sons toy room 👍🏻 thanks.

My one and only New Year’s resolution, I ever made, and ever kept, taking care of junk mail the day it arrives and organizing bills. I’ve kept that for 15 years and just getting rid of that clutter, got me started on keeping only what I needed. It’s so less stressful and to be very honest, less expensive.

Oh, Mayim, you won't believe it: today I'm waiting for a charity institution truck to come to my house and pick several donations up, and I wasn't willing to let an specific toy box go, 'till I saw your video! Actually, sometimes I get emotional with stuff, specially when it comes from my daughter early childhood, but I'll bear it!!!
Love you, regards from Brazil!

"Stop it with the emotions!" It's going on a cushion. That will bring me joy. I love you!

Love this video! I recently cleaned out my basement and got 12 bags of junk out that I threw away. The hardest things to throw away were my kids school papers from kindergarten. Well, my twins are 31 years old. Had to keep telling myself I can't keep everything! I felt like I accomplished something when I was done. Thanks for the great video.

I am a crafter and a book loving person. I did take all the books that are not on shelves and put books on shelves. I have taken all my fabric that has children's prints and is over 2 yards long, donated to the local Evangeline branch of the Pioneers group. They're making nap time blankets 4 kindergarten preschool classes. They were very happy. And so was I.

I love these suggestions! We have way more stuff in our homes than we’ll ever need. You might need to force yourself to be a little robotic about decluttering to begin with, but after a while the whole process stops feeling cold and unsentimental. It’s almost as if a spell is lifted and you realize that you really don’t need half the stuff that’s lying around your house. And yes, there is something relieving and freeing about the whole process!

If I could add one suggestion, it is this: Organize and store things where you are likely to use them! Cleaning supplies for the kitchen: Keep them in the kitchen! Candles and matches for a cozy evening? Keep them where you are most likely to plant yourself for a cozy evening! And those vintage postcards? If you’re serious about putting them up, then stick them where you want them with some blue tack or a piece of tape, and one of two things will happen: You’ll get the frames within a day or two, or you’ll realize that it looks tacky and it’s really not worth the effort, so you’ll throw them out. Make it easy on yourself, and program your environment to make keeping things nice, tidy, and organized the most straightforward option.

I love your honesty and personal examples! I don’t do all of the “wrong” things but I do have a “one day” problem! Lol. You’ve inspired me to work harder to pair down on those one day items. Thank you

I save everything..I just recently gave away my son's baby clothes .. he just turned 22 yesterday!!! I'm so ashamed 😭.
Baby steps though. I plan to start letting go of more items and free up more space

First of all I watch everything you post but I saved this one and I play it every time I need to really clean. I have gotten rid of so many things I have kept because I got it as a gift even though I hate it or no way would I use it. I can’t tell you how much space I have now. Thank you!

I absolutely love your videos. I usually purge the closets in my house every 6 months. I don't purge as much as I would like and my husband doesn't purge AT ALL, but it definitely is a freeing experience. My kids are 13, 11 and 5 and I use it to teach them the difference between "needs" and "wants" and the responsibility we have to help the less fortunate.
