I just picked up a Greenworks Dethatcher on FB marketplace for $25. The first thing I did yesterday was to replace the tines. Good as new. Works SOOOO much better with new tines.

Hey Ryan, all your material is fantastic at getting useful information to anyone managing "turf". One thing you may want to mention about renovating over old grass is the effect that occurs if you just cover the old grass with dirt. As the old leaf blades decay, it does two things that harm the new grass trying to grow. 1) The decay process produces methane gas. This pushes carbon dioxide away from the roots. Not good. 2) The decay process is a chemical reaction that produces heat. That heat isn't good for newly developing roots, and the worst thing is that since its subsoil, we only can see the after effect instead of being able to spot a problem and save it. That's why you want to remove as much old material as possible. Thanks again for all your great content. All the best!

This is exactly where I’m at now. I sprayed my 8000 sq ft lawn and have mowed it down to 1” but it looks identical to yours in the video. I’m going to power rake next until I can see some soil as you have suggested and throw down the seed and turn on the water! Thanks

I haven’t broken any tines by always going forward only, never backwards. Great dethatcher and cheap

Perfect timing on this Ryan, I’m renovating my entire front lawn in 3 days! Scalp, aerate, and dethatch before I seed.

I'm doing a mini reno on my side yard (400 sq ft) and after nuking it I found good success using my weed whacker to chop the grass off down to the roots/soil. Time will tell how it works, but so far so good!

Was going to do my back yard renovation like I did the front this past year, but my backyard is 3 to 4 times bigger and it's much work by yourself lugging all that soil by wheelbarrow. My front lawn renovation using Seed Superstore 100% KBG came out AWESOME. Best lawn on the block by far. Envy of all the neighbors. So wish I had a "son" to help me (lol).

Good luck with the Reno. I just got a plug aerator that hooks up to the hitch on my riding lawn mower and did some aeration today

Ryan, I have a very uneven area where a tree was removed . I would say it dips down about 8 inches from the level grade and is about six feet in circumference. I have TTTF. Instead of killing the whole area or digging out the existing turf, I was thinking of scalping it down this fall as low as the Honda will go, dethatching, filling with topsoil over the grass and then seeding. Do you think that would be successful? I’m thinking the topsoil would smother the original grass and I could grow new on top of it to level everything out. Any thoughts? As always, thanks to all you guys for the tips and inspiration...even Connor 😉

For anyone else looking at getting an electric de-thatcher like that, I would recommend the Sunjoe instead. Same price point and has a swappable scarifier attachment as well.

How much yards of topsoil did you order? I'm wondering how much I should order to level my backyard (3000 sqft).
