Inside a Hajj Flight - Garuda Indonesia “Special” B747-400

Join me on a Boeing 747 Hajj Flight from Indonesia to Saudi Arabia. Definitely an experience to remember for my whole life!

The journey started at Soekarno-Hatta Int’l Airport in Jakarta. 450 pilgrims checked in outside the airport and came directly to the airside waiting to board the Boeing 747. Many of them were first-time flyers. To speed things up, there was no boarding pass, pilgrims were given a seat number with red on the left and blue on the right side of the plane. Once the engine had started, many pilgrims began chanting prayers for a safe flight.

Captain Vitaly from Russia and First Officer Anton from Ukraine flew the Boeing 747 flight. Flight time to Jeddah was just over 9 hours. Garuda Indonesia wet-leased the B747-400 from Aquiline International to fulfill the mission.

Passengers were extremely humble and quiet during the flight. Many of them never used an airplane toilet before and need crew assistance. The Hajj flight crew were contractors who only worked for 2 months as Hajj cabin crew, nevertheless, they work with pride and honour as Hajj is a national event of Indonesia. They were extremely attentive to the needs of pilgrims ensuring they had a smooth journey.

Just before flying over Saudi Arabia, many pilgrims changed into white robes and the group leader started prayer calls at the point of Miqot where the pilgrims commenced Hajj. We arrived at the special Hajj terminal in Jeddah. After landing, it was an emotional moment with most pilgrims thanking the crew for taking good care of them while leaving the plane.

It was an absolute honor and privilege for me to join them on the flight. I experienced some of the most amazing human kindness from all the passengers and crew! Most of them waited and saved all their life for this moment; trip of a lifetime!

With the completion of our flight, stage 1 of the Hajj has been concluded with over 200,000 Indonesian pilgrims transported to Saudi Arabia making Hajj one of the mighty airlift operations.

Join me on a “once-a-lifetime” experience to fly with Hajj pilgrims back home on Stage 2 of Hajj Flight:

In just 12 days, stage 2 of Hajj will start bringing back the pilgrims back home. I hope to join the 747 once more to document the return home leg. No doubt, it will be emotional

As a Saudi, we have seen so many nationalities come to Hajj & Umra. & I can say with confidence that Indonesians are the most organized most civilized & most kind visitors we come to see in Saudi Arabia. They the best people to host here. God bless all Indonesians. We Saudis love you all ❤❤

I am Indonesian, but a chinese born Indonesia also a buddhist (not muslim) but since I grew up in Indonesia, we all respect this moment Because this is really moment of a life time to our Muslim fellows. Not only had to wait for many years, but sometime obstacles can be happen when the time to Hajj arrive. I believe this is not an easy journey. Because Hajj moment is a dream comes true to every Muslim. Luckily, Indonesia most religion, so All the Hajj will feel more relax going to Hajj Because all in flight are in same destination. 😊 Selamat menunaikan ibadah Haji dan menjadi Haji yang mabrur.

Hi Sam, UK viewer and Muslim here.

Just to clarify for you due to the language barrier,
The white cloth that you saw the men wearing is called the "Ihraam", for men, its a 2 piece white cotton thick cloth that they must wrap around their body and waist, for women, they must cover their entire body. The Ihraam represents purity and cleanliness in Islam, and that we are all equal, regardless of how much wealth/status you have, we are all equal in God's eyes. It also represents what a person will be wrapped in when they die, 2 pieces of cloth.

Then in terms if what is the "Miqaat", this is the checkpoint where all men and women must be in the "state of Ihraam", as they have now reached the checkpoint for Umrah/Hajj, now they cannot take off their Ihram until they have completed their Umrah. The Miqaat is different for everyone, as it depends on which direction/country you come from towards Jeddah airport for Umrah/Hajj.

In case u were wondering what's Umrah & Hajj and the difference - Umrah is the small pilgrimage that can be done any time of the year, but Hajj is the main pilgrimage, and only takes place on the 12th Islamic month (Dhul Hijjah), hence its great significance to us.

Hope this helps, and great video.

As a non-Muslim American, I was immensely touched by the passengers' faith, the kindness and respect of the crew and the shear joy of finally making a journey of a lifetime. It truly is a renewing experience for them all and a joy to observe from afar

Wow! I am non-Muslim European, and I do not really consider myself to be very religious, but in the last 23 minutes, I have witnessed something incredible!

I have always thought that these Hajj flights are special, seeing all the different ACMIs helping in during these periods of the year, but have mostly only looked at it from a logistical point of view... Well that view has definitely changed after watching this video!

The logistics are indeed unbelievable, but so are the people behind the operation, and also the pilgrims.

As someone who has flown multiple times already, yet only being in my 20s, I cannot imagine the excitement of the pilgrims who have been waiting for this moment all their life, and not only that, but it is usually also their first flight in most cases... What an incredible journey this has to be!!

Thank you very much Sam, for capturing these moments, and sharing them with us!! I hope you will be able to also document the return journey, because I am really looking forward to it!!

That Air Hostess who helped the seniors with the Lavatory 🚽 situation and cleaned it as well is pure class act. Anyone who takes care of seniors 👵🏻 like that is a gem of person, beauty on the inside and outside #WifeyMaterial 😍

As a now retired Air Atlanta Icelandic Captain, who operated many of these flights for Garuda, this video brings back fond memories of these fights.
They were so well organized and ran like clockwork. And the cabin crew and passengers were a joy.

I'm Indonesian and Muslim, and watching this brings tears to my eyes because it's something very close to my heart. Fifteen years ago, I lost my grandfather during his Hajj pilgrimage. He passed away while fulfilling this sacred journey, not due to any incidents, but simply because it was his time to return to the mighty Creator. According to Saudi law, deceased pilgrims cannot be sent back to their home country, so my grandfather was buried in Saudi Arabia.

We were heartbroken when we received the news, but we also found solace knowing that he passed away while undertaking such a noble and revered journey. We believe he now holds a special place by God's side. May he rest in peace.

Thank you very much for covering this flight. I've been an avid fan of yours for a long time, and I must say, this is my favorite video of yours. I also felt deeply for you regarding the food poisoning incident, but I'm relieved it turned out well in the end and that you still managed to gracefully proceed with the video. You're truly a class act!
