M4 iPad Pro Review - 6 Months Later

Why would anyone spend THIS MUCH MONEY on an M4 iPad Pro? The 13 inch model we got with the new Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil Pro set us back $1,777 before tax. Yikes. Are there use cases where this iPad really excels? Can you really say spending this much on an iPad is worth it when an iPad Air or MacBook Air would be a suitable and less expensive option?

We'll answer those questions and more, including our thoughts around the limitations of iPadOS compared to MacOS and who, if anyone, we'd ultimately recommend this iPad for.

A balanced and fair review. It is incredibly overpriced and if had budget for only 1 device would go the Air every time. However as have budget for both I love the upgrades on this model and find myself reaching for and using it significantly more than previous model.

Future iPads with M5, M6, and M7, no matter how powerful these processors are, iPad OS will always hinder the full potential. That's where I think Apple is stuck because I don't think they want a fully functional OS for the iPad because it will hurt their Macbook sales.

The conclusion was brutal .. for me I chose the iPad over the MacBook simply because I can connect wherever I go using a cellular connection. Close second is the security as it supports MDM (mobile device management) and is enrolled in our work corporate system, and I could access all my emails and conduct Teams calls. Unlike the MacBook. For gaming, I got my Switch, and for reading, I got the Kindle. I know it's a lot to carry but it works for me.

Josh, I totally agree with your assessment on if people need an iPad Pro or not. The feature limitations that apple puts into these devices is beyond annoying, especially considering how much capability the underlying architecture has. If they enabled multi-user logon, not only would Apple’s iPad Pro sales go down, but also their iPad and iPad Air sales which is a big reason why I think they don’t enable this.

Another BIG problem with the iPad "Pro" is the inability to stream 2 audio sources at the same time. It can lead to a game of "whack-a-mole" tracking down the audio sources that are stopping your main audio from playing. It can be annoying. And it is an APPLE limitation, because sometimes iPadOS bugs out and DOES allow 2 audio sources to stream at once. It's an Apple-joke of an OS.

Thank you for being so critical of iPadOS and iOS in general. I can't stress enough how much I hate that my M4 iPad Pro, something that's supposedly more powerful than my M3 air, feels like a toy in comparison. And I hate myself even more because I bought it anyway because it's the best device that you can buy for the right niche that I'm on - rhythm games at 120hz. The displays on the previous iPad Pros had horrendous pixel response times, but this one feels like many light years better.

I love my m4 iPad. As an avid photographer I find the display an absolute pleasure to edit on. Really liked your breakdown. Definitely a bit too pricey.

It seems that the new OLED iPads have not significantly changed the demand for tablets. We are in a saturated market, and OLED technology does not appear to be a game-changer that could spark a major sales uptick. This situation has unintended consequences, leading Apple to reconsider its OLED strategy. I've heard that they have already postponed the release of OLED MacBooks by a year, as they anticipate a similar lukewarm response to demand. The lacklustre reviews of these iPads have not helped the situation.

One issue with reviews today is their inherently negative tone; they tend to judge products primarily on whether they are a worthy upgrade. This perspective overlooks the fact that tablets typically have a long upgrade cycle of about five years, making comparisons with last year's models unreasonable and unhelpful. Additionally, comparing iPads with MacBooks can be misleading, as each device serves different purposes. For instance, if I want to write or draw and come across reviews recommending a Mac over an iPad, I question the reviewer’s perspective. I believe these devices are complementary; one should choose the better iPad or MacBook based on individual needs, or buy the best of both if budget allows.

In conclusion, my assessment is centred on understanding the needs of tablet users, comparing iPads to Android alternatives, and determining which iPad is suitable for you while considering budget constraints. iPad Pros cater to a niche market, with sales of only 7.5 million units a year, so they are not aimed at everyone; in fact, they serve a very small audience. Therefore, the negativity from individuals who do not grasp these points seems more like posturing than constructive feedback.

The Ipad is the only product where I recommend the cheapest 10th gen Ipad for 90% of people because even if you buy the most expensive one, there's isn't anything that you can do fundamentally different on the expensive one as the cheaper one can do most of the tasks.

I’m left-handed and it still have an issue with the Apple Pencil. When I squeeze the pencil for more options, the elliptical with three circles in it when I try to click it disappear. I sent the information to the Apple development since iOS 17 still the same problems if I was right handed for flawless only complaint I really have.

iPads need their own version of Dex. The reason Samsung tablets are so much easier to recommend no matter the need is because their software is more able to satisfy customers needs along with incredible hardware. iPadOS is not made for a Magic Keyboard.
