I got so used to you and Alberto playing it that now even Furtwängler's recording seems too fast :D

i think it was the second! beethoven has always struck me as a composer of gestures; i often hear in his music, which is brought to light when i compare what i hear to what is written in the score, musical objects that are described in technical terms with the notes and rhythms that present themselves as purely unitary sound objects. when i hear the slower tempos of this opening, i feel an intellectual comprehension of the rhythm, but the faster tempo of the second feels almost like a 'riff' that feels like a single musical item instead of a series of connected notes.

For me he wanted to hear the first. He was very severe with dynamic marks. But I think the orchestra was not naturally inclined to play what he wanted so I think the second choice is possible.
