Interviewer: Beethoven couldn’t hear. Him: so you have chosen death

he was also perfect pitch and had the best relative pitch and knew harmony and notation and music theory.

And just because he was deaf doesn't mean he forgot the concept of the crescendo

I love that melody. That bass Beethoven could hear not only in his head, but surely with the ears too.

He also took advantage of "bone conduction" - he supposedly had a stick that contacted the piano, with the other end in his teeth so the vibrations could be conducted through his jaw/skull to his inner ear (that part still worked).

Beethoven also invented bone conduction, so he could hear the piano up until the very end.

Most people don't know that Beethoven never got totally deaf, maybe in his 2 last years of life the hearing got worse and then maybe he was deaf, not before.

The key to beginning one’s understanding of the greats in antiquity is to read accounts of people close to them. Bravo to this scholar!

Was not prepared for that out of pocket statement 😅

Even if Beethoven was genuinely deaf, I'm sure he pretty much remembered all the sound/pitch well enough to write them down on paper

I own a little study book by Czerny, that I used when I was a small kid learning the piano. The only study book that every kid loved: they weren't boring study lines, but actually lovely little music pieces that sounded so good that you wanted to play, not because you had to but because you liked it.

Beethoven NEVER became completely deaf. Even towards the end he could still hear especially loud or sudden sounds. His hearing loss didnt cause problems with his composing, it instead negatively affected his ability to perform publicly and thus earn money from his compositions. After briefly contemplating suicide, he wrote a letter to his brothers (that was never sent) where he pledged to live on for and through his art.

Ok so I think I found what source he was referencing, Czerny's opus 500 chapter 2, but I cannot find within it any passage that mentions Beethoven still heard with an ear trumpet. I used an english translation I got off of IMSLP, so if anyone could point me in the direction of where that piece of info about Beethoven originated from, it would be most appriciated!

The reality is Beethoven's deafening was no different to elderly people who require hearing aids.

If hearing aids existed back in Beethoven's time, we wouldn't be talking about his deafness.

And, I will add this, only non composer say "well Beethoven was already deaf". So what? Beethoven didn't need to hear his music played by some musician, he already had the music in his ear. A composer with that experience doesn't need to actually hear it, he needs to hear it in his mind. That is all he need

Its a popular misconception that Beethoven went totally deaf. In fact he never did lose his hearing all together, as as the time of his death, he could still faintly hear low noises and sudden loud sounds

SO basically he just really needed a hearing aid

Beethoven is the best. The world without him would be more ugly.
