Thanks for this tutorial! I tried enabling transmission on the point light but it nothing changes. Is there other settings you need to have enabled?

if you want softer shadows - use a bigger light source, do not mess with the sss radius or your character will look unrealistic in different light conditions. keep it base, adjust your lights, otherwise you will only end up confusing yourself and wondering what went wrong. the standard settings are pretty realistic, and sss color usually has values around RGB 48% 17% 11% for light skin and RGB 36% 13% 7% for dark skin. Those are measured values from tests with humans so they should work for most characters. Your crazy pink made her look like a plastic doll :)
